This position presents an exceptional opportunity to become part of a team devoted exclusively to the life sciences sector, collaborating with prominent biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on intricate patent development, protection, and enforcement matters for both small and large molecule portfolios.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Hold a JD from a top-tier law school and possess a strong academic record.
  • Have an active Bar Admission in North Carolina.
  • Bring substantive experience of 4+ years in patent counseling and prosecution within the life sciences industry.
  • Have a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Demonstrate expertise in working with biotechnology companies and investors, concentrating on international patent portfolio development, lifecycle management, non-infringement and invalidity analysis, post-grant proceedings, and IP due diligence.
  • Prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive patent portfolio management advice to life sciences clients, including the development, prosecution, and enforcement of patents across national and international markets.
  • Lead client engagements in strategic IP lifecycle planning, addressing complex matters such as second-generation drugs, biologics, and international patent strategy.
  • Perform due diligence assessments and deliver high-quality counseling on transactions, infringement, defense, and avoidance strategies.
  • Represent clients in significant patent disputes before the USPTO, including post-grant proceedings and other contentious matters.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to shape patent protection strategies that align with client objectives in the discovery-stage biotechnology sector, as well as with established pharmaceutical companies.
  • Develop and implement IP strategies that safeguard and enhance the value of client assets, offering guidance on non-infringement, invalidity, and competitive positioning.
