Job Summary
The Clinical Veterinarian LAM position entails the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of laboratory animals to ensure their well-being and adherence to regulations concerning ethical and compassionate treatment. This role facilitates study execution by collaborating with Study Directors and other staff members. The Veterinary Specialist LAM plays a crucial role in the reproductive toxicology department, particularly in the care of infants and assessment of dams. Additionally, they are responsible for developing training programs for staff members and guidelines for the care of high-risk animals.

About the Position
Initially serving as a CDC quarantine facility, this site has evolved into a center of excellence for biopharmaceutical studies during the discovery phase, with a focus on non-GLP therapy for non-human primates (NHPs), early discovery studies, and model development. The work environment is dynamic and offers flexibility, allowing employees to engage in various research aspects and closely collaborate with sponsors both in-person and virtually. Despite being a smaller facility with 35 employees, you will have the opportunity to know each colleague by name and have access to senior management. Despite its size, this facility is part of a network of four large animal research facilities across the country, providing access to a wide range of scientific expertise and fostering collaboration among colleagues. The veterinarians actively participate in studies, assisting study directors in data interpretation, surgeries, and biopsies.
Responsibilities
- Provide routine and specialized veterinary services, including medical care, dental care, imaging, and surgical procedures.
- Lead the management and resolution of complex medical cases.
- Assist in the design and implementation of preventive medicine programs.
- Train and supervise staff on technical procedures and the ethical treatment of animals.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding animal care and use.
- Develop, review, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for animal-related matters.
- Conduct training sessions on husbandry, veterinary care, animal models, safety, biosecurity, emergency response, and occupational health.
- Support the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee in protocol reviews and management of animal colony issues.
- Select animals for specific research based on expertise in species and research techniques.
- Assume regulatory responsibilities in the absence of the attending veterinarian.
- Execute preventive health programs and manage domestic isolation programs and animal colony health.
- Share clinical rotation duties, including on-call weekends and holidays.
- Serve as an after-hours emergency contact.
- Provide expertise and guidance in the development of animal models.
- Author and present publications and conference presentations.
- Undertake special projects or assignments based on personal interests.
Qualifications
Education:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree required.
- DACLAM Certification is a plus, but not required. We offer dedicated study time to prepare for the exam.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in veterinary medicine, with a willingness to learn and work with small primates.
Licensing:
- Must hold an active veterinary license in at least one US state.
- California State License in Veterinary Medicine must be obtained within one year of starting the job.
- Graduates of non-AVMA accredited veterinary schools must have certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG).
