Director of Site Operations - Breeding Colony and Primate Facility

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dynamic individual to lead our primate breeding and facility operations as the Director of Operations at our Florida location. We are seeking someone who is passionate about primate welfare and is dedicated to advancing research in primate breeding. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the operations of our Breeding and Maturation colonies, which house a total of 6700 primates in spacious outdoor facilities located in a rural setting.


  • Develop and implement effective operational strategies and protocols

  • Supervise all aspects of facility operations, including animal care, maintenance, breeding and husbandry groups, and security

  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare and research regulations and protocols

  • Collaborate with veterinary staff to maintain optimal health and welfare of primates

  • Manage the facility's budget and ensure financial goals are achieved

  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including partners and regulatory agencies

  • Supervise and optimize the allocation of facility resources, including personnel, equipment, and supplies

  • Responsible for overseeing Veterinary Services, Husbandry, Facilities, and HR personnel management

    • Veterinary Services

      • Evaluate and oversee the efforts of the Attending Veterinarian to ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and other regulatory agencies. Focus on enrichment and behavior to meet animal needs

    • Husbandry

      • Evaluate and oversee the activities of the Manager of Husbandry Services to ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and other regulatory agencies. Focus on proper housing and care of the animals

    • Facilities

      • Evaluate and oversee the Manager of Facilities to ensure compliance with regulatory standards for the immediate environment of the animals. Ensure infrastructure support meets county, state, and federal regulations, including environmental impact. Implement the Disaster Response Plan

    • HR Personnel Management

      • Act on behalf of all PPI employees to ensure a healthy, safe, and non-discriminatory workplace in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations

    • Institutional Officer

      • Collaborate with the IO to secure funding and support for the facility, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards set by the Animal Welfare Act and other government entities

  • Maintain accurate records of all operational activities, including animal care, maintenance, and security procedures

  • Ensure all facility staff are trained in safety and security protocols

  • Develop and implement comprehensive emergency plans and procedures


  • Advanced degree in biology, animal science, or related field

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience managing the operations of a complex animal facility, with at least 5 years in a leadership position

  • Thorough understanding of animal welfare and research regulations and standards

  • Proven ability to lead a team and develop effective operational strategies

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with others

  • Strong record-keeping skills and experience managing budgets

  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and additional hours as required

  • Physically fit to handle heavy objects and work in outdoor conditions
