The Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse (RN) delivers chronic hemodialysis care and treatment, devises nursing care plans, and provides assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, training, and education. The RN communicates with the healthcare team to interpret, adjust, and complete patient care plans, and assists in research studies.

The Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse is accountable for supporting and assisting the unit management team in achieving patient satisfaction, quality, staff development, business management, teamwork, culture, and employee satisfaction.

The RN is also responsible for comprehending, supporting, implementing, and interpreting the philosophy and policies of the corporation.

Ensuring the safe and effective delivery of age-specific patient care, overseen by the Unit Medical Director, in accordance with facility procedure manual standards, as well as regulations established by state, federal agencies, and the company, is a crucial responsibility of the Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse.

The assigned duties of the Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse will have varying distribution of effort based on individual assignments and needs, under the supervision of a Coordinator, Director of Nursing, and Unit Medical Director. These duties include:

  1. Demonstrating applicable knowledge of policies and procedures related to the Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse, licensed practical nurse, and patient care technician.
  2. Performing technical skills for the Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse, including the patient's treatment, water treatment facility, and emergency procedures, based on the competency assessment program.
  3. Delivering age-specific care to assigned patients as prescribed, encompassing all aspects of the hemodialysis procedure in accordance with state licensure.
  4. Working proficiently with diverse patients and staff, regardless of race, gender, disease process, lifestyle, religious or cultural beliefs, or treatment.
  5. Obtaining, transcribing, and documenting physician's orders as necessary.
  6. Initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments following established procedures. Assessing patients pre/post treatment and reporting any issues to the coordinator/charge nurse.
  7. Establishing priorities of care, both emergent and non-emergent.
  8. Developing and integrating theoretical and technical knowledge, observations, assessment, and communication skills to identify dialysis and non-dialysis related problems.
  9. Recognizing opportunities for patient and family education and providing necessary training.
  10. Maintaining a safe environment for self, patients, and staff by utilizing proper body mechanics, adhering to universal infection control precautions, and following OSHA regulations for cleaning procedures.
  11. Dialyzing isolation patients in accordance with isolation precautions and prescribed procedures.
  12. Assessing patients pre/post treatment and promptly reporting any problems.
  13. Performing hemodialysis access care following established procedures.
  14. Administering and correctly documenting authorized medications as directed by a physician and authorized or limited by the State Board of Nursing Practice.
  15. Reporting any significant information or changes in patient condition to the Coordinator, Center Director, and physician.
  16. Ensuring clear, complete, and accurate documentation of all relevant information in the patient's manual or electronic record.
  17. Participating in the formulation, update, and revision of nursing care plans, including long and short term goals, as per established guidelines.
  18. Performing or assisting in emergency operational procedures, including patient evacuation during fire or disaster.
  19. Obtaining blood samples and other ordered specimens.
  20. Initiating and discontinuing blood transfusions and monitoring patient progress based on established policy in the hospital (if applicable).
  21. Cooperating with and supporting other hospital departments, while adhering to all hospital policies and procedures (if applicable).
  22. Evaluating and providing ongoing individualized quality patient care through frequent contact with in-home patients via telephone, home visits, and doctor's appointments when applicable.
  23. Assessing, evaluating, and recommending home training program for patients and their assistants (where applicable).
  24. Periodically re-evaluating home patients' procedures and providing necessary training updates (specific to dialysis units).
  25. Effectively performing reuse of dialyzers and properly documenting per policy.
  26. Assessing patient treatment outcomes related to reprocessed dialyzer usage, dialysis adequacy, and implementing prescribed changes.

The Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse also assists with and performs the safe operation, disinfection, and inventory control procedures in accordance with corporate and departmental policy, manufacturer recommendations, and regulatory agency guidelines.

These procedures include:

  • Assisting in supply ordering, maintaining inventory, and keeping records in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
  • Maintaining a neat, orderly, and well-stocked unit.
  • Using equipment, time, and supplies economically.
  • Maintaining competency in operations, sanitization, maintenance, and use of all dialysis equipment, water treatment, and special procedures equipment.
  • Actively participating in care, routine cleaning, and use of equipment, in coordination with the supervisor and Biomedical Engineering Department.
  • Reporting equipment and supply issues appropriately and following policy for repair personnel and biomedical support staff.
  • Picking up and delivering supplies, blood samples, records, and reports as directed by the Coordinator or Center Director.

Under the direction of the Center Director/Coordinator, the Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse assumes administrative duties, which include:

  • Assisting in the orientation and training of new and existing staff.
  • Acting as a resource person within the scope of practice for staff members.
  • Participating in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects with the healthcare team.
  • Maintaining prompt and appropriate communication regarding any water, equipment, or facility problems according to facility reporting guidelines.
  • Effectively communicating with physicians, supervisors, co-workers, patients, and families.
  • Fostering positive working relationships with the Medical Director/Medical staff.
  • Actively participating in unit staff meetings and in-services.
  • Aiding the Hemodialysis Coordinator/Center Director in staff scheduling, including rotation, to ensure adequate coverage.

The Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse takes responsibility for personal and professional growth opportunities, and:

  • Promotes, supports, and adheres to all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Completes clinical and corporate training programs to master ESRD patient care for hemodialysis, PD (as appropriate), management skills, leadership development, and communication skills.
  • Participates in scheduled in-service classes to stay informed of the latest developments in dialysis techniques.
  • Seeks resources for guidance as needed.

The Hemodialysis Registered Professional Nurse performs additional duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and is responsible for specific projects. This includes maintaining a working knowledge of all hemodialysis, related ancillary and emergency equipment used in the facility, such as reuse equipment, water treatment equipment, computers, hemodialysis machines, sphygmomanometers, conductivity meters, glucometers, scales, electronic thermometers, centrifuges, EKG machines, IV infusion pumps, code carts, suction machines, oxygen administration equipment, and personal protective equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or health-related field preferred.
  2. Approximately one year of nursing experience.
  3. Current appropriate state licensure.
  4. Desirable hemodialysis experience.
  5. Preferred ICU/CCU experience.
  6. Successful completion of training course in theory and practice of hemodialysis.
  7. Valid driver's license and insurance for business travel by automobile (if applicable).
  8. Desirable computer knowledge.
  9. Successful completion of current CPR Healthcare Recognition according to the American Heart Association.
  10. Possession of reliable transportation.
