HR Manager (Labor Relations)

Location: Boston, MA
Salary $70,000 - $90,000 Per Year
The Employee Relations Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting managers and employees by providing guidance on HR policies and practices. They are responsible for conducting research and investigations to address concerns and providing recommendations to promote positive employee relations. The primary focus is to serve as a valuable resource for resolving day-to-day workplace issues.
Responsibilities:
  • Advise and guide managers in effectively managing complex employee relations and performance issues
  • Offer consultation and interpretation of HR policies for both employees and managers
  • Address and resolve employee complaints related to policy violations, such as discrimination, harassment, and other work-related issues received through the employee hotline and other channels
  • Suggest appropriate resolutions for complaints, develop action plans, and ensure follow-through
  • Coach and advise managers on performance management, disciplinary actions, and ensure proper documentation
  • Collaborate with HR Business Partners and line of business leadership to handle involuntary terminations and mitigate risks effectively
  • Prepare position statements in response to labor complaints, audits, charges, and legal matters at the local, state, or federal level
  • Monitor daily dashboard metrics to optimize productivity and adherence to service level agreements (SLAs)
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in HR or a related field
  • 3-5+ years of experience working in a union environment
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to provide strategic direction in handling grievances and arbitrations
  • Preferred HR certification
  • Familiarity with state and federal employment laws
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across multiple states
  • Ability to make fair and consistent decisions, exercise sound judgment
  • Capable of maintaining neutrality and handling stressful employee relations issues with grace and diplomacy
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with individuals at all organizational levels
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information on a daily basis
  • Analytical skills to independently analyze data and provide constructive recommendations to management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with case management technology preferred
Additional Notes:

  • Offer consultation and interpretation of non-routine HR policies for both employees and managers
  • Address and resolve employee complaints related to policy violations, such as discrimination, harassment, and other work-related issues received through the employee hotline and other sources
  • Previous experience working with unions is required
  • Previous experience in negotiating union contracts is required
  • Skilled in labor relations and influencing without formal authority
