Moldmaking Specialist

Location: Fremont, OH

Our esteemed client, a well-established manufacturer of machinery, is currently seeking a skilled Journeyman Moldmaker for their facility in Fremont, Ohio.

Position Summary:

The Moldmaking Specialist will be responsible for constructing and repairing various plastic blow molds, including the assembly process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate Bridgeport type mills.
  • Utilize brushes, scrapers, air hoses, grinding wheels, and refractory material to smooth and clean inner surfaces of molds.
  • Inspect products using precision measuring instruments to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Regulate pressure, temperature, speed, feed rates, and cycle times.
  • Assemble mold parts, tools, and dies.
  • Drill, countersink, and ream holes in parts and assemblies for fasteners.
  • Shape and form metal parts using manual drill press, lathes, power saws, snips, files, sand blasters, surface grinders, and mallets.
  • Perform water tests and inspections on molds for quality assurance.
  • Plan machine shop tool setup and operation, considering material tolerances and machine tool feeds and speeds.
  • Use precision measuring and gauging tools for required inspections throughout the machining process.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, quality, and safety standards.
  • Identify and report defective tooling, machine malfunctions, and dimensional deviations.
  • Report any defective materials or questionable conditions to maintenance or management.
  • Read and interpret quality instructions and communicate with colleagues regarding mold work.
  • Record data on required documentation for quality assurance purposes.
  • Work independently and identify areas for improvement in safety, methods, part quality, machine and tooling performance, and productivity.
  • Assist in blow molding re-work and provide manufacturing-related insights to product designers.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment to meet quality and quantity targets.
  • Proficiency in operating machinery to produce parts as directed.
  • Capability to provide training, instruction, and assistance to trainees during their training period.
  • Proficiency in shop math, basic reading, writing, and print reading.
  • Ability to conduct tests and inspections on products.
  • Demonstration of a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
  • Logical reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.
  • Ability to determine the causes of operating errors.
  • Adherence to structured work guidelines and schedules.
  • Ability to read and follow visual cues.
  • Familiarity with machines, tools, designs, uses, and maintenance.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong teamwork and individual work capabilities.
  • Capability to provide operating instructions.
  • Judgment to plan, perform, and make decisions regarding setups and processes within recognized methods and procedures.
  • Control operations of equipment.


  • DOL Journeyman card is required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Preference given to candidates with technical school training.
  • Knowledge of equipment-related terminology, methods, tooling, gauging, etc.
  • Previous manufacturing and polishing experience is advantageous.

Work Environment:

Employees will be working in a manufacturing environment, with occasional exposure to moving equipment, mechanical parts in motion, risk of shock, and other hazards associated with a manufacturing setting, such as overhead cranes, welding, machining, and painting. The following physical requirements should be expected:

  • Occasional lifting, pushing, and carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds during an average eight (8) hour shift.
  • Intermittent standing and sitting throughout the workday.
  • Reaching, bending, twisting, overhead reaching, walking, and carrying of parts.
