MARINE ELECTRICIAN
NAVAL ELECTRICIAN
Salary: $35-38 per hour
Total Compensation: $72-80K + + Bonus + Full Benefits
The Naval Electrician is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and installing electrical equipment and systems on naval vessels, shore-tie installations, and other shore side facilities. This position ensures safety protocols are followed to prevent personal injury and property damage. It is a part of the bargaining unit represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Plan, install, and diagnose electrical system components
•Troubleshoot and repair electro-mechanical and electro-hydraulic devices or systems
•Overhaul and repair electric motors and controllers
•Perform periodic measurements of electrical devices for ABS and Coast Guard compliance
•Install and maintain shipboard sound powered phone systems
•Repair and maintain power distribution switchboards, electrical generators, and other power distribution components
•Ensure work area is clean and safe
•Provide assistance to other skilled employees when necessary
EQUIPMENT USED:
oVarious mechanical and pneumatic hand tools
oDrill presses, electric drills, grinders, and hydraulic hole punches
oElectric wire and cable strippers and crimpers, wire and cable bundling tools, arbor press
oMotor vehicles including trucks and forklifts
oTwo-way radios, computers, soldering equipment, irons, and torches
oAssortment of electrical and electronic measuring devices for diagnostics and repairs
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Proficiency in using various hand tools and measuring devices
•Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints
•Capability to create technical documents and briefings
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•Strong troubleshooting skills for control circuits
•Understanding of marine electrical requirements set by USCG and ABS for Delaware Bay and vessels
•Experience in installing marine cable and wiring in a safe and approved manner
•Knowledge of safety precautions related to the field
•Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, IEC, and other electrical and electronics conventions as they apply to vessels
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
•High School diploma or equivalent or relevant experience
•Experience working with shipboard electrical systems
•Preferred experience on vessels certificated by the USCG under Title 46 CFR Subchapters H or I
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
•Valid driver’s license
•Must obtain Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within 90 days of employment
•Required training and licensing:
▪F.C.C. General Radio Telephone License with Radar Endorsement
▪Sperry Gyro Training
▪Sperry Radar/Radar Unit Training
▪Sperry Antenna
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
•Subject to background investigation and pre-employment physical including drug test
•Mandatory direct deposit or enrollment in the payroll card program to receive biweekly pay
•Flexibility to work at any required hours for continuous operation of the facility
•Willingness to sail on vessels as needed
•Ability to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (less than 20 lbs.)
•Comfortable working on high ladders, aloft, or over the side of vessels
•Able to work in extreme temperatures (hot or cold) and humidity
•Capability to work in confined spaces and use a respirator
- Must be a U.S. Citizen (requirement of US Coast Guard for mariner credentials)
