Model Shop / Tool Room Machinist (MSTR)
Job Title: Model Shop Technician
Location: Hartford, CT
Overview: Our client is in search of an experienced Model Shop / Tool Room Machinist (MSTR) to take on the important role of leading and managing the technical operations of our R&D machine shop. This position involves developing innovative methods for processing intricate, low volume engine components using experimental materials, all while maintaining a safe working environment. The MSTR will work closely with the Engineering Team to refine hardware design, fixtures, and machining and measurement processes using tools such as SolidWorks and Mastercam. Alongside guiding machinists and identifying training needs, this position will drive continuous enhancements in quality control procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership: Provide expert guidance, training, and support to a team of 2-3 machinists to ensure high productivity and adherence to strict quality standards. Demonstrate adaptability and resourcefulness in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
- Planning and Coordination: Collaborate with engineering, engine build, and materials planning teams to strategically schedule and prioritize work orders, maintaining on-time delivery to internal customers.
- Quality Control and Improvement: Design, implement, and maintain robust quality control processes to increase the success rate of new and existing projects. Drive continuous improvement initiatives based on performance data and feedback.
- Workflow Optimization: Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for all machine shop activities. Utilize KPI data to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to optimize workflow and operational efficiency.
- Equipment Maintenance: Work with maintenance teams to ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and servicing of all machinery, minimizing downtime and ensuring precision in operations.
- Safety Compliance: Enforce safety protocols and regulations, ensuring all team members adhere to safety guidelines. Actively participate in safety meetings and inspections to maintain a compliant working environment.
- Training and Development: Develop and facilitate comprehensive training programs to enhance machinists’ programming, manufacturing, and measurement skills. Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the team.
- Effective Communication: Maintain clear and open communication channels with other departments, such as engineering and procurement, to foster collaboration and resolve cross-functional issues efficiently.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate records of production activities, machine maintenance, and quality control measures. Generate and present reports to track performance and support decision-making processes.
- Budget Management: Assist in developing and managing the machine shop budget. Monitor expenses related to materials, equipment, and personnel to ensure cost-effective resource utilization.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications or technical training preferred.
- Proven experience as a Tool Maker or Model Maker, with a solid background in new product development.
- Extensive knowledge of machining processes, CNC programming, and related technologies.
- Demonstrated hands-on leadership ability with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and quality control standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and implementing process improvements.
