Operations Manager

Power Plant Operations Manager

Location: Bridgeport, CT
Reports To: General Manager


Position Summary

The Power Plant Operations Manager provides leadership and direction to plant operations personnel to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of power generation equipment. Under the general supervision of the General Manager, this role is responsible for overseeing daily plant operations, developing operational procedures, ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory standards, and maintaining high performance standards for personnel and equipment.

The Operations Manager plays a critical role in maintaining plant safety, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement while serving as the primary liaison for market and transmission communication in non-real-time scenarios.


Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Direct daily activities of Shift Supervisors and plant operations staff to meet generation targets, optimize plant efficiency, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve start-up, shutdown, emergency, and abnormal operation procedures.

  • Monitor plant operating performance and prepare operational and outage reports in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Investigate operational incidents and equipment abnormalities to drive reliability and reduce maintenance requirements.

  • Ensure plant personnel are trained, qualified, and operating in accordance with established procedures and safety protocols.

  • Develop and implement action plans to align employee accountability with operational goals and standards.

  • Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard operations staff, ensuring complete orientation and safety training.

  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets and provide input on capital expenditure planning.

  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues and contribute to root cause analysis.

  • Set departmental goals aligned with customer, employee, owner, and market needs.

  • Support the EHS Compliance Supervisor in executing all plant safety and environmental programs.

  • Lead plant-wide training initiatives, including budget planning and scheduling.

  • Ensure consistent application of best practices across all operational shifts.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the ISO-NE Lead Market Participant and transmission operator for non-real-time production issues and communications.

  • Oversee compliance with NERC Reliability Standards, including reporting requirements for bulk electric system malfunctions, relay operations, and other events with strict reporting deadlines.

  • Maintain knowledge and reporting accuracy for GADS and ensure proficiency in Microsoft Office, Maximo CMMS, and Siemens T3000 systems (Siemens combustion turbine experience is a plus).


Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Occasional overnight travel required.

  • Must be physically capable of accessing all areas of the plant, including stairways and elevated platforms.

  • Ability to work in office and industrial environments.

  • Exposure to high heat, noise, steam, hazardous materials, rotating machinery, and other industrial hazards is expected.


Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering preferred, or equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in power plant or similar industrial facility required.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience supervising technical and administrative personnel.

  • Proven leadership and motivational skills required.

  • Experience managing a unionized workforce is strongly desired.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods, climb stairs/ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Required to wear protective gear including hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection, fall protection, and more.

  • Work in environments with exposure to hazardous materials, high temperatures, and loud noise.

  • Must be available for extended hours, shift work, holidays, and weekends as needed.

  • "On-call" status will be required periodically.

  • Participation in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and ongoing random drug testing, is mandatory.
