Main Responsibilities of a Physical Therapist:

  1. Develop and implement personalized treatment programs based on Physical Therapy principles and practices. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team. The Staff Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.

  2. Provide assistance in managing Lymphedema.


1. Review requisitions for Physical Therapy.

a. Conduct patient interviews and assess their physical condition and needs.

2. Create a corrective exercise and treatment plan for assigned patients.

a. Determine appropriate equipment usage, application, and body positioning. Adjust as necessary for treatments such as exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and traction.

b. Instruct patients on program components, including proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetic appliances and devices.

c. Recommend program modifications or changes based on ongoing evaluation of progress.

d. Consult with physicians as needed to discuss alternative options.

3. Prepare written documentation, including evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and discharge summaries, as required by the profession and the department.

4. Communicate observations, facts, and comments with nursing and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure efficient coordination of the overall healthcare plan.

5. Provide guidance and direction to staff members assigned to assist in patient care.

6. Maintain department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality initiatives, as well as safety and infection control standards.

a. Adhere to hospital-wide safety protocols:

1. Preserve a safe environment for patients, visitors, and colleagues.

2. Stay knowledgeable about all hospital safety policies and procedures, including fire safety and disaster protocols.

3. Follows all safety practices regarding equipment.

4. Use all safety devices on equipment and ensure proper working condition.

5. Wear safety clothing, glasses, gloves, shoes, etc. as required and follow "Universal Precautions" as indicated.

6. Report any unsafe acts or conditions to the supervisor.

7. Attend safety programs as scheduled.

b. Familiarize oneself and comply with the department's "Policy and Procedure" manual.

c. Provide assistance as needed to the Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators.

7. Help care for and maintain department equipment and supplies.

8. Attend meetings as required and participate in committees as directed.

9. Assist with the transportation of patients to and from the Physical Therapy Department, when necessary.

10. Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Senior Therapists in their absence.

11. Enhance professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, staying up-to-date with current literature, attending in-service meetings, workshops, etc.

12. Attend all annual mandatory educational programs required for the position.

13. Provide age-appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

14. Understand and demonstrate the importance of meeting the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with them in a friendly and caring manner, attending to their psychological and physical needs, and maintaining communication to ensure a pleasant and secure experience.


  • Must be licensed, or eligible to obtain a license, to practice physical therapy in NYS at the time of hire.


  • Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.


  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire date.


  • This position requires significant physical effort or strain, including occasional repetitive tasks. It may involve lifting, pushing, and pulling. The ability to independently lift at least thirty (30) pounds and up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds with assistance is necessary.


  • Category II. Involves tasks with no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. However, there may be unplanned instances where Category I tasks will need to be performed.


  • Adheres to universal precautions in all patient care activities.
