Power Plant Engineer

Reports To: Plant Manager
Location: Tulsa, OK
Schedule: Full-Time


General Summary

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Power Plant Engineer is responsible for overseeing the daily energy delivery operations of the facility. This role ensures optimal plant performance in alignment with the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Interconnection Agreement, and associated operating guidelines. The Plant Engineer serves as a key liaison to the Energy Offtaker, providing daily plant output forecasts and supporting operational decisions to optimize performance metrics such as heat rate, availability, and capacity. This position also supports troubleshooting, performance analysis, and engineering projects in coordination with the Operations and Maintenance Managers.


Essential Job Functions

  • Provide the Energy Offtaker with a daily report of the plant’s maximum available output to guide energy scheduling.

  • Review week-ahead and day-ahead energy schedules and collaborate with the Operations Manager to determine dispatch and unit operating status.

  • Coordinate and ensure compliance with NERC standards, participating in internal and corporate NERC compliance committee activities.

  • Oversee the annual capacity test, establishing the contractual plant capacity for the year.

  • Administer the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to ensure contractual compliance; support monthly invoicing processes.

  • Track and manage daily plant availability, identifying and addressing O&M issues that affect availability targets.

  • Monitor the control system and generation imbalance, ensuring proper utility notifications are issued and avoiding Penalty Events.

  • Ensure compliance with regional transmission operating guidelines, identifying and mitigating potential operational issues.

  • Utilize the on-line performance monitoring system to assess the thermodynamic performance of plant components, including turbines, pumps, HRSGs, steam turbine, condenser, and cooling tower.

  • Analyze and address plant performance issues, working with Operations and Maintenance on solutions, including instrumentation calibration.

  • Complete special projects as assigned by the Plant Manager or Corporate Operations team.

  • Maintain dependable and consistent attendance.

  • Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.


Supportive Job Functions

  • Assist Operations and Maintenance teams in troubleshooting plant performance and equipment issues.

  • Support environmental compliance reporting in collaboration with the Operations Manager.

  • Provide engineering expertise for outages and plant upgrade initiatives.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong analytical and business-case development skills.

  • Proven leadership and communication skills, including the ability to effectively present to large groups.

  • Ability to collaborate across departments and with external stakeholders.


Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.

  • Six (6) or more years of experience in power generation operations, including combined-cycle or steam-cycle plants.

  • Experience in energy scheduling, performance improvement, and transmission grid operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions to enhance both technical and operational plant performance.
