Plant Engineer (Power Plant)

Power Plant Engineer - Bridgeport, CT

Position Summary: As the Power Plant Engineer, you will be responsible for coordinating and implementing engineering support functions for plant operations and maintenance. Your role will involve providing technical support to ensure safety, environmental compliance, and contract adherence. In addition, you will analyze plant breakdowns, recommend corrective actions, and oversee project execution. You will also serve as the main technical contact point for insurance matters and provide overall plant engineering function and IT support.
Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Lead the engineering department and establish clear goals and objectives, ensuring defined areas of responsibility and performance standards for the various functions within the department including engineering, plant performance, operations and maintenance support, safety and environmental compliance support, and IT support.
2. Develop, implement, and evaluate plant-specific performance monitoring related to availability improvements and thermal efficiency.
3. Manage plant improvements and capital processes by collecting necessary data, exploring alternatives, evaluating economic feasibility, and implementing modifications to enhance safety, availability, efficiency, and environmental performance. Conduct investigations into plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, and provide analyses, recommendations, reports, and follow-up plans as required.
4. Establish and maintain a tracking system for plant issues that impact safety, environmental compliance, equipment condition, budget, or generation.
5. Use tools and analysis techniques to identify potential equipment issues that may cause future forced outages or risks to personnel. Contribute to the development of preventive maintenance and scheduled maintenance activities.
6. Evaluate equipment failures and assist in conducting Root Cause Analysis to prevent recurrence. Investigate plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, and provide necessary analyses, recommendations, reports, and follow-up plans.
7. Maintain and update plant drawing files and equipment files, as well as records on testing, unit availability, generation and downtime statistics, thermal performance, DCS configuration, and water chemistry.
8. Direct and control engineering expenditures to ensure compliance with budget guidelines and provide relevant input to the budgetary process.
9. Provide technical support in the preparation of bid specifications, evaluation of vendor/contractor bid proposals, and monitoring of contractor work performance to ensure contract compliance.
10. Administer IT, including DCS, to safely complete repairs, modifications, and software changes without impacting unit operation.
11. Collaborate with and support various departments, such as Administration, Operation, Maintenance, and Environmental Health and Safety, to help achieve their goals and objectives. Offer technical input as required.
12. Coordinate with Corporate Engineering and external contacts such as maintenance and engineering firms, manufacturer sales representatives, service personnel, and vendors to discuss field changes, address equipment-related matters, resolve problems, and exchange information. Interact frequently with plant personnel, including shift supervisors, technicians, and operations and maintenance staff, to address issues, provide technical support, and exchange information.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
14. Adhere to safety and environmental policies, procedures, and rules, participate in training, and promote the highest value of the company, including EH&S and NERC compliance, through actions and conduct that positively affect morale.
Education/Experience Required:
Job Qualifications:
1. Possess a bachelor's degree in engineering or its equivalent, with a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant power plant-related experience.
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of power plant operations, including knowledge of plant equipment, operations and maintenance components, and computer and control systems. Familiarity with chemistry related to power plant operations and water treatment programs. Basic knowledge of budgets, bid proposals, contract evaluation, and accounting principles. Additional knowledge of chemistry, physics, engineering, and plant operations is advantageous.
3. Exhibit the ability to plan, coordinate, and direct various programs and tasks that impact the entire plant operation. Analyze and interpret data to make sound professional judgments and recommendations. Possess strong managerial and motivational skills to lead and interact persuasively with other managers and plant employees.
4. Have at least five years of experience in supervising technical, supervisory, and administrative personnel. Demonstrate strong leadership and motivational skills.
5. Licensing - Holding a professional engineering license in the state of Connecticut is not required, but strongly encouraged.
6. Possess proficient English language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.
