  • 10-15+ years of municipal water/wastewater process-related design experience.

  • 2- 5+ years of experience leading design projects.

A leading Water Design Center is seeking a Process Engineer Lead – Wastewater to build, lead, and manage a team of engineering professionals supporting a wide range of municipal water and wastewater projects. This role offers a unique opportunity to be hands-on with design, implement and optimize treatment processes, mentor a growing team, engage directly with clients, and contribute to business development initiatives.

What You’ll Do:

You will manage projects from conceptual planning through detailed design and construction support, including:

  • Facility and equipment layouts.

  • Design calculations and equipment vendor coordination.

  • Coordination with regional offices, regulatory agencies, and support disciplines.

  • Performing quality reviews of designs and ensuring quality assurance compliance.

  • Evaluating and designing major process equipment for water and wastewater treatment plants and facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support regional teams with treatment-related business development.

  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for water and wastewater treatment systems.

  • Prepare design calculations, construction documents (plans and specifications), and cost estimates.

  • Coordinate detailed design services with mechanical, structural, and electrical disciplines.

  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.

  • Participate in client meetings, industry conferences, and serve as a subject matter expert.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, develop, and lead process engineering talent.

  • Develop project scopes, schedules, level of effort estimates, and fees.

  • Plan, manage, and balance team workloads.

  • Coordinate and maintain project schedules and budgets.

  • Drive quality assurance and standardization efforts across process deliverables.

  • Lead development and training related to process standards and tools.

Note: Some travel may be required for client meetings, proposal development, site assessments, design reviews, and industry conferences. Collaboration and proactive problem-solving with project team members are essential for success in this role.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain one.

  • 10+ years of municipal water/wastewater process-related design experience.

  • 2+ years of experience leading design projects.

  • Experience with process modeling software such as Hydromantis GPS-X, Dynamita Sumo, and/or EnviroSim BioWin.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PE licensure in multiple states (SC, NC, GA, FL, TN preferred).

  • 15+ years of municipal water/wastewater process-related design experience.

  • 5+ years of leadership experience in design projects.

  • Existing relationships with municipal clients.

  • Experience with hydraulic modeling software.

  • Strong experience overseeing detailed process designs for major infrastructure projects.

  • Comprehensive understanding of water and wastewater treatment plant systems in large campus-style environments.

  • Proficiency in Bluebeam and Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word).

  • Demonstrated expertise in process equipment evaluation, sizing, and cost estimation.

  • Active involvement in professional organizations such as AWWA, WEF, or WRF.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit.

  • Experience delivering technical presentations to clients and professional audiences.

  • Strong teaching, coaching, and mentorship skills.
