  • As a Respiratory Care Practitioner, you will provide respiratory care services following physician orders, departmental protocols, and policies and procedures. You will work under the supervision of the System Director, designated charge therapist, or licensed physician.

1. Familiarize yourself with various oxygen delivery methods and the necessary equipment. Demonstrate the ability to adjust delivery devices to suit the patient's age and condition. Assess and monitor possible side effects of oxygen therapy.

2. Assess, implement, and document respiratory care needs for patients after discharge.

3. Administer respiratory therapy treatments using different modalities for medication delivery, volume expansion, and bronchial hygiene, taking into account the patient's age. Follow departmental protocols and understand the purpose and potential side effects of each treatment.

4. Initiate, maintain, and discontinue mechanical ventilators, both invasive and non-invasive. Perform associated procedures specific to the patient's age, such as airway management and suctioning.

5. Perform arterial and capillary blood sampling, understanding the possible complications and contraindications. Label and transport specimens appropriately for analysis.

6. Analyze blood gas specimens without difficulty and follow procedures for critical values, including taking action, notifying the appropriate individuals, and documenting. Troubleshoot blood gas analyzers when necessary.

7. Conduct pulmonary function testing according to guidelines.

8. Prepare patients and equipment for bronchoscopy and provide assistance to physicians during the procedure. Process and transport specimens post-procedure and complete necessary post-procedure duties. Maintain a high physician performance rating.

9. Obtain good-quality 12-lead EKGs and complete associated documentation.

10. Perform functional checks on patients' own respiratory therapy equipment (CPAP, BiPAP) and document accordingly.

11. Distribute oxygen tanks throughout the facility and return empty tanks to the storage room. Clean and process non-disposable respiratory therapy equipment. Replenish RT equipment as needed.

12. Obtain nasal specimens for Influenza A, Bordetella Pertussis, and RSV testing. Ensure proper transportation of specimens to the laboratory and complete appropriate documentation.

13. Adhere to and respect patients' rights.

14. Maintain confidentiality and only access patient information necessary for assigned tasks.

  • Hold a valid license as a Respiratory Therapist or Technician in the State of New York. Possess a credential as a Certified Respiratory Therapist issued by the NBRC.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire date. Complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training within 1 year of hire date.
  • Minimum requirement is a recent graduate.
