Senior Environmental Health and Safety Manager - Multiple Locations

Position Summary:

Our company is seeking a highly motivated Senior Environmental Health and Safety Manager to develop and implement programs that prioritize reducing occupational injuries, illnesses, and financial losses. In this role, you will be responsible for identifying potential risk factors, evaluating the potential extent of resulting injuries, and implementing accident-prevention and loss-control systems. Additionally, you will coordinate safety activities across multiple facilities and compile statistical data on occupational illnesses and accidents.

As the Senior Environmental Health and Safety Manager, your ultimate goal will be to lead continuous improvement efforts in safety at all locations and ensure that our employees return home injury-free to their families every day. You will also maintain liaison with external organizations, such as fire departments and rescue teams, and actively participate in activities of related professional organizations. This role involves managing a team of professional safety staff.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with company leaders to develop a strategic plan and initiatives based on the company's vision
  • Implement strategic initiatives to improve safety and environmental performance at three manufacturing locations and one corporate location
  • Effectively communicate the vision to the organization and engage all levels of the company in working towards achieving it
  • Lead culture change activities and create awareness building tools to foster and sustain an injury-free work environment
  • Establish corporate safety policies and standards
  • Cultivate proactive relationships with regulatory agencies, such as OSHA, EPA, and DNR
  • Mentor front line supervisors and provide guidance to enhance their understanding of communication and activities necessary for maintaining an injury-free work environment
  • Regularly interact with plant employees to positively reinforce safety critical behaviors and mitigate at-risk behaviors
  • Collaborate with all employee owners to address safety concerns and improve safety practices
  • Lead safety continuous improvement teams and manage related projects
  • Conduct routine audits of safety and environmental processes
  • Ensure completion of corrective actions resulting from audits and incident investigations, and verify their sustainment
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to safety and environmental regulations, and file reports with regulatory agencies as required
  • Deliver effective training and presentations internally and externally
  • Establish and monitor leading safety performance indicators/metrics, and communicate them to all employee owners
  • Develop relationships with local medical care providers and emergency response organizations to enhance the quality and efficiency of care for our employees
  • Manage the random drug and alcohol testing program, as well as the 2nd chance program
  • Oversee the worker's compensation and return to work process for injured employees
  • Take charge of emergency response actions for first responders during incidents, such as injuries, fires, severe weather, and training exercises

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field is required
  • Preferred: Postgraduate degree in Safety, Business, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in plant/corporate safety culture leadership
  • Hold Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification and/or Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA) Certification
  • Familiarity with the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF), National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
  • Working knowledge of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and EPA standards, regulations, and guidelines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with plant-level safe work practices and procedures
  • Willingness to actively engage in the shop environment
  • Demonstrated self-starting attitude with dedicated follow-through on projects and deadlines
  • Exemplifies managerial courage
