We are in need of a dynamic and enthusiastic clinical veterinarian to contribute to the growth, improvement, and management of our veterinary program at a primate breeding facility. We seek an individual who can think quickly, handle clinical cases, and enhance the overall veterinary program as we continue to expand. While experience in NHP breeding is preferable, what truly matters is finding someone who is eager to take charge of a veterinary lab animal program and help elevate it to a premier level. The Clinical Veterinarian will play a crucial role in our team by:
- Providing comprehensive medical and surgical care for laboratory animals to ensure their well-being and welfare.
- Conducting physical, ophthalmic, and other necessary examinations on laboratory animals.
- Sharing expertise in animal health, biology, physiology, and research methodology with scientists and technicians, while also providing training when needed.
- Assisting the site supervisor in ensuring that animal care and welfare policies and practices comply with relevant regulations.
- Reporting any concerns related to animal care and actively participating in resolving them.
- Working with non-human primates in a fast-paced environment.
- Developing and enhancing your clinical, surgical, and regulatory veterinary skills alongside a dedicated team.
As a Senior Clinical Veterinarian, your responsibilities will include:
- Managing clinical cases efficiently and effectively.
- Overseeing the breeding colony and its operations.
- Reducing morbidity and mortality rates among the animals.
- Providing valuable input on growth designs.
- Delivering training to husbandry and veterinary staff, ensuring they are well-prepared to fulfill their roles.
- Creating, maintaining, and improving Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Reporting any concerns related to animal care and actively participating in resolving them.
- Assisting the site supervisor in ensuring that animal care and welfare policies and procedures comply with relevant regulations.
- Conducting physical, ophthalmic, and other necessary examinations on non-human primates.
- Providing comprehensive medical and surgical care for the animals, prioritizing their well-being.
- Ensuring the animals' physiological welfare through environmental enrichment, pairing, and group formation.
- Taking charge of animal pairing and group formation, modifying groups as needed to ensure compatibility, mental well-being, and prevent stress-related issues.
- Ensuring compliance with the minimum environmental enrichment requirements and expanding the program to address both short-term and long-term resident needs for optimal health and mental well-being.
- Performing behavioral assessments prior to euthanasia in potentially problematic cases.
- Receiving additional duties as assigned.
- Ideally, the clinical veterinarian will possess:
- Clinical experience, though we are willing to train the right candidate.
- Experience in laboratory animal medicine or emergency veterinary medicine.
- Desirable, but not required, experience working with non-human primates. However, a strong desire to work with NHPs is essential.
- Active DEA registration.
- Ability to obtain or commitment to obtain a Florida DVM license within 60 days of receiving an offer.
