Senior Highway/Traffic Engineer

Senior Highway Traffic Engineer (Civil Engineering)

Salary Range: $120,000 – $140,000 (Higher compensation available based on experience)

Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Highway Traffic Engineer to lead critical transportation projects for prominent clients such as PennDOT, the Turnpike Commission, and other public and private entities. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape infrastructure solutions that enhance traffic flow, safety, and efficiency. The ideal candidate will have 12–15 years of progressive experience in traffic engineering, project management, and client relations, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage major traffic engineering projects for high-profile clients including PennDOT, Turnpike authorities, and municipal/state agencies

  • Provide expert oversight in traffic system design, traffic signal optimization, highway layout, and congestion mitigation strategies

  • Supervise and mentor a team of engineers and technical professionals, promoting excellence, development, and adherence to engineering best practices

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, ensuring clear communication, project updates, and timely issue resolution

  • Conduct and review traffic impact studies, operational analyses, safety assessments, and intersection/corridor evaluations

  • Develop and implement traffic management plans and transportation models to support strategic planning and operational efficiency

  • Review and approve technical reports, design plans, and specifications to ensure compliance with AASHTO, MUTCD, and applicable state/local guidelines

  • Lead proposal development, technical writing, and client presentations for new business opportunities and regulatory submissions

  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables while balancing multiple priorities and ensuring quality outcomes

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, innovations, and emerging technologies in traffic and transportation engineering


Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or a related discipline (Master’s degree preferred)

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license is required

  • 12–15 years of experience in traffic/highway engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership or project management capacity

  • Proven track record of managing large-scale transportation projects with clients such as PennDOT, Turnpike authorities, or similar agencies

  • Strong leadership and team-building capabilities, with experience mentoring and developing engineering talent

  • Excellent client-facing skills, with the ability to build and maintain long-term relationships

  • Proficiency in traffic analysis tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, or other modeling software

  • Deep knowledge of engineering standards including AASHTO, MUTCD, and local/state requirements

  • Solid project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource planning

  • Exceptional communication abilities, both written and verbal, with experience presenting to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies

  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving abilities and a keen eye for identifying performance improvement opportunities
