Job Summary

Join our team as a Senior Interior Designer and play a crucial role in developing designs and documentation for a variety of projects. In this position, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of specific design and documentation tasks while also guiding and mentoring junior staff members.

Essential Functions

Sr Interior Designer (8+ Years Experience)

  • Experience: We are looking for candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design and a minimum of eight years of relevant experience. While certification as a licensed professional is preferred, it is not required.
  • Role: As a Senior Interior Designer, you will actively participate in the conceptual design phase and provide comprehensive support throughout the project. You will collaborate with Project Managers, Architects, and consultants to develop and present innovative design solutions. Furthermore, you will coordinate with the Director and Department Head to ensure technical excellence and effective product strategies. The size and complexity of the projects you handle will distinguish you from more junior team members.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Showcase your expertise in conceptualization, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration on assigned projects.
  • Demonstrate effective communication with both internal and external consultant team members.
  • Maintain regular communication with client team members to facilitate the flow of information.
  • Participate fully in virtual and in-person project meetings, taking the lead in certain meetings that involve coordination with consultants and internal teams.
  • Display proficiency in written communication via email and virtual platforms.
  • Prepare meeting notes using standard client formats.
  • Ensure the accuracy of your work by thoroughly reviewing it and addressing any questions or concerns with project team leaders. You may also be responsible for reviewing the work of junior staff members.
  • Collaborate with the client team and adhere to established project schedules.
  • Adhere to client conventions for digital file management and promote these practices within the project team.
  • Coordinate work with internal client project teams and sub-consultants.
  • Participate in the preparation and delivery of client presentations, both in-person and virtual, and take the lead on specific portions of the presentations.
  • Develop your portfolio in a specific market sector.
  • Show comprehensive knowledge of time management skills required to handle multiple projects of varying sizes.

Design, Visualization, and Space Planning

  • Showcase your creativity in design and your ability to adapt design solutions to different types of buildings.
  • Integrate interior design with architecture to create cohesive and unified statements.
  • Implement design directions while considering construction methods and coordinating with engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of space planning conventions, including legal clearances, human scale and ergonomics, functional organization, and three-dimensional planning implications.
  • Assist in developing design solutions and present multiple schemes to internal and client teams.
  • Exhibit knowledge of the function, price points, lead times, and durability of products and systems used in projects.
  • Proficiently use computer-aided visualization tools and share this expertise with team members.
  • Research manufacturers and select appropriate colors, finishes, and materials based on function, client preferences, aesthetics, and cost. Coordinate with team members and senior leadership to incorporate accurate information into drawings. You may also delegate selections to junior staff members on certain projects.
  • Contribute to client presentations and support business development activities by creating presentation materials, such as digital or physical finish boards and visual slide-deck presentations.
  • Stay up to date on design trends in fashion, industry, and culture.
  • Select and present multiple FF&E schemes to both internal and client teams, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of function, price points, lead times, and durability of products used in projects.

Delineation, Detailing, and Documentation

  • Produce building project documentation from concept to construction documents. Gather and assemble data to complete drawings, including detail drawings for architectural millwork, furniture case goods, custom furniture, tile, and stonework. On certain projects, you may delegate these tasks to junior staff members.
  • Create Interior Finish lists and Finish location plans and elevations, demonstrating an awareness and application of industry construction best practices.
  • Produce construction documents under the guidance of the Project Architect, following architectural graphic conventions of line weight, scale, and sheet organization.
  • Adhere to client's Revit/AutoCAD standards, file, and drawing organization.
  • Conduct site observations, including taking photographs and recording dimensional notes. Coordinate with the Project Architect during this process.
  • Accurately perform numerical tasks such as square footage calculations, furniture counts, and material quantity take-offs for budgeting purposes. You may delegate these tasks to junior staff members on certain projects.
  • Show thorough knowledge of Building, ADA, and Life/Fire safety codes, as well as their industry-wide applications and the impact on space planning. Understand how to interpret applicable local, federal, and state accessibility, building, and fire codes.

Specifications, Resource Management, and Budgeting

  • Oversee the maintenance of resource materials and databases in physical and digital libraries.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of Furniture, Fixtures, Equipment (FF&E), and Material costs, becoming a leading technical resource for the firm.
  • Prepare and oversee the development of FF&E specifications, FF&E location plans, and budgets using client-established software and formats.
  • Prepare and analyze the bid tabulation of FF&E bid documents.
  • Oversee and coordinate Interior Finish lists and tagging of Finish location plans and elevations. Coordinate with the client's Specifications team.
  • Provide financial recommendations to clients.
  • Coordinate with third-party FF&E procurement companies.
  • Develop strategies for cost management at each project phase in collaboration with Senior Leadership.
  • Check the work of junior staff members.

Construction Administration

  • Participate in value engineering exercises, suggesting alternatives and incorporating accepted changes.
  • Answer Requests for Information (RFIs) and coordinate responses with the project team.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals using client software, ensuring effective filing of reviewed materials.
  • Coordinate with construction managers, contractors, and the client's procurement team.
  • Attend regular construction phase meetings.
  • Coordinate with the client's internal Construction Administration team and processes.

Other

  • Undertake special projects and duties as assigned or requested.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in design or possess equivalent work experience.
  • Have a minimum of 8 years of experience in interior design, design management, and design services.
  • Have 4+ years of experience creating interior design solutions.

Training Requirements (Licenses, Programs, or Certificates)

  • NCIDQ Professional Registration preferred, with plans to pursue certification at this level.
  • Advanced computer and information management skills, including AutoCAD and Revit.
