Sr Fire Protection Engineer

Job Description:

Utilize CAD equipment to create standard layouts of fire protection systems, detailed drawings, assembly drawings, sketches, and diagrams. Ensure all necessary views and dimensions are included for efficient field installation. Prepare submittals, acquire permits, and adhere to project schedules. Make decisions of moderate complexity and consult senior engineers and/or management for any questions or issues. Demonstrate a strong understanding of design and drafting techniques, familiarity with fire protection terminology, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Design Responsibilities:
  • Develop detailed drawings, hydraulic calculations, and stock lists that comply with applicable NFPA/local/state codes, project specifications, and ensure efficient and cost-effective field installation.
  • Conduct accurate field surveys when necessary.
  • Coordinate drawings with the MEP team and General Contractors.
  • Create submittal packages for approval from AHJs, Contractors, etc. Obtain all required approvals.
Project Management Responsibilities:
  • Procure materials, review preliminary change orders, generate RFIs, and establish/maintain project schedules.
  • Communicate with field personnel, AHJs, customers, sales representatives, and field superintendents.
  • Retain overall project responsibility for approvals, material procurement, coordination, and adherence to schedule.
  • Participate in all project-related meetings.
  • Perform other assigned/recommended job duties.

Key Skills and Capabilities:

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret construction documents, such as drawings, specifications, ASIs, etc.
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical aptitude.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel), AutoCAD, and Fire Protection Design software (e.g., AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic calculations, stock listing, project design, and project management.
  • Practical experience in designing Wet, Dry, and Pre Action Sprinkler Systems for installation.
  • Familiarity with general construction practices and terminology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated team player.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 13, 13D, 13R, 14, 20, and associated Codes/Standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in Fire Protection Design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Fire Sprinkler Design Software is mandatory.
  • Experience with Revit, NavisWorks, and AutoSprink is a plus.
  • NICET II or higher certification.
