Job Duties, Functions, and Qualifications of the Position:

About the Role:

As the Laboratory Operations Manager, you will report to the Laboratory Director while overseeing the Clinical Lab staff, including Microbiology Supervisors, Processing Supervisors, Cytology Supervisors, Histology Supervisors, and other personnel involved in patient specimen testing. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and other relevant regulations, including waste disposal and employee safety. Additionally, you will be responsible for evaluating and documenting the competency of testing and specimen processing personnel and developing departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute strategic plans for laboratory operations to align with organizational goals.
  • Provide guidance and set performance goals for supervisors and laboratory operations.
  • Analyze Quality Assurance measures to identify customer requirements, turnaround time, staffing needs, and other laboratory concerns.
  • Recruit and direct staff, including orientation, training, competency assessment, performance evaluations, and goal setting.
  • Adhere to organization policies for counseling employees, as needed.
  • Establish and monitor productivity benchmarks for all laboratory employees.
  • Implement and maintain a continuing education program for clinical laboratory personnel.
  • Collaborate with key clients and support sales representatives in maintaining client relationships.
  • Prepare periodic budget reports that outline volume, expenditures, and proposed testing and instrument expansion areas.
  • Review instrument functions and ensure compliance with schedules and standard operating procedures.
  • Oversee referral and entry of referral testing results and analyze for discrepancies.
  • Assess clinical laboratory production and staffing to optimize efficiency.
  • Aid in problem resolution for laboratory operations.
  • Provide consultation and answer inquiries from sales and marketing, physicians, physician's office staff, and patients regarding procedures, interpretations, and clinical laboratory operations.
  • Conduct medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to support disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
  • Maintain and revise the clinical laboratory to meet College of American Pathologist (CAP) standards, CLIA regulations, and other applicable requirements.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Chemical, Biological, Medical Technology, or Physical Science
  • Master's in Business Administration or other health-related field (preferred)
  • Certification under the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), or equivalent registry
  • At least five years of laboratory training and/or experience and two years of previous laboratory management experience
