Environmental Specialist - Manufacturing
Muskegon, MI
A large union manufacturing facility in Muskegon, Michigan, is seeking an Environmental Specialist to join its site Environmental Health and Safety team. The position reports to the Plant EHS Manager and carries day-to-day responsibility for environmental compliance across a high-volume production environment. This is a plant-level role suited to a hands-on environmental professional with direct experience managing multi-media compliance programs in a manufacturing setting.
Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday
Compensation: $90,000 - $105,000 Per Year
What You'll Do
As the Environmental Specialist, you will manage environmental compliance across air, wastewater, stormwater, chemical handling, waste disposal, and recycling programs at the facility level. You will develop and maintain the systems, processes, and records necessary to ensure the plant remains in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local permits and regulations.
You will compile and submit required environmental reports to regulatory agencies at all jurisdictional levels and coordinate all environmental sampling activities, including scheduling, contractor oversight, data review, and follow-up documentation. Accurate recordkeeping is a core function of this role.
Beyond compliance management, you will work directly with line personnel and operations leadership to build environmental accountability into day-to-day plant activities. This includes coaching frontline employees on their environmental responsibilities and supporting the broader EHS team in continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline
- 2 to 3 years of plant-level environmental compliance experience in a manufacturing or industrial facility
- Working knowledge of multi-media environmental programs including air, wastewater, stormwater, and waste management
- Experience preparing and submitting reports to federal, state, and local regulatory agencies
- Familiarity with environmental permit requirements and associated recordkeeping obligations
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a regulated compliance environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a union manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) regulatory requirements and permitting processes
- Background in environmental sampling coordination and contractor management
- Experience developing or delivering environmental training to plant personnel
- Proficiency with environmental data management or compliance tracking software
