A hospital in east central Ohio is hiring a Pharmacy Purchasing Associate to manage the purchase and inventory of pharmaceuticals across the health system. This role works closely with vendors, clinicians, medical staff, and management to ensure product quality, value, and availability, and reports directly to the Director of Pharmacy.

What You'll Do
This role is responsible for purchasing a wide variety of pharmaceuticals for daily hospital and surgery center operations, working closely with vendors, clinicians, and management to secure the greatest quality and value. The associate reviews Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) contracts and applies them when feasible, maintains current knowledge of GPO contract availability, and utilizes 340B split billing software to ensure purchases are billed to the correct account. Day to day work includes receiving, returning, and maintaining stock levels for the organization and surgery center, updating preferred items with the wholesaler, and reporting changes to the Pharmacy IT team. The role validates medication barcodes and reports cost and scan details to Pharmacy IT, recommends new products or substitutions to management, and provides product information for new formulary items added to the Epic Medication List. The associate performs value analysis and cost saving documentation, monitors and adjusts stock levels, and conducts financial analysis on product selection, including impact on existing contracts and service quality. Additional duties include resolving vendor invoice discrepancies, converting requisitions to purchase orders, reviewing backorders, ordering consignment inventory and completing the monthly consignment report, preparing unit dose and barcoded labels through the Medi-Dose program, and performing quarterly unit inspections of medications in the CII safe and Pyxis units. The role also processes drug boxes and bulk charge medications documented on anesthesia records, reviews shortage inventory and reports to appropriate staff, matches direct invoices with packing slips, and maintains ASNs for DSCSA compliance. The associate stays current on cost effectiveness standards, industry trends, and communicates regularly with pharmaceutical representatives on new products and contract terms. The role assists with the annual physical inventory of all pharmaceuticals and orders, receives, and transfers controlled substances in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current Ohio Board of Pharmacy registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee (candidates not yet certified must obtain Certified Pharmacy Technician status within one year of hire)
- Three years of experience in purchasing and inventory
- Strong interpersonal, decision making, facilitation, conflict resolution, and investigative skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with 340B split billing software
- Familiarity with Epic Medication List systems
- Experience with GPO contract review and utilization
- Background in hospital or health system pharmacy operations
