The Registered Respiratory Therapist will be responsible for providing respiratory care to patients of all ages, ranging from infants to geriatric individuals. This role requires working under the guidance of the Respiratory Care Department leadership team and the Medical Directors of Respiratory Care. The Registered Respiratory Therapist will adhere to regulatory standards, clinical practice guidelines, and approved policies and procedures. This position will frequently require independent decision-making in accordance with clinical practice guidelines.

1. Perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures within the scope of practice, including general care, critical care, emergency care, and diagnostic procedures. Examples of these procedures include patient identification and assessment, medical gas delivery, medication administration, broncho pulmonary hygiene, and hyperinflation therapy.

  • General Care: Perform patient identification and assessment, administer medication via nebulizers and MDI/DPI, provide broncho pulmonary hygiene, and perform hyperinflation therapy.
  • Critical Care: Initiate, manage, and wean invasive and non-invasive ventilation, manage airways and perform suctioning, monitor cuff pressure and ETCO2 levels, perform intubation and extubation, and manage high risk newborn deliveries.
  • Emergency Care: Respond to rapid responses and emergency codes, perform CPR and airway management, and actively participate in patient stabilization, internal and external transports.
  • Diagnostic Care: Perform blood sampling and analysis, collect specimens, provide continuous and noninvasive monitoring, conduct pulmonary function screens, and perform electrocardiograms (EKG).

Note: Critical test results will be reported promptly in accordance with hospital policy.

2. Safely assemble, operate, and troubleshoot therapeutic and diagnostic equipment required for patient care. This includes gas administration, monitoring and analyzing devices, mechanical devices, and laboratory equipment for blood gas analysis.

3. Apply Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines to provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective care based on evidence-based best practices.

4. Educate patients on disease-specific processes, tobacco cessation, and respiratory care services, including instruction on home care equipment and medications.

5. Provide clinical instruction to respiratory care, nursing, medical students, and residents as needed. Actively participate in the orientation of new staff members and contribute to their professional growth.

6. Adhere to all Respiratory Care and Hospital Policies and Procedures for the assigned areas and demonstrate independent functioning in these areas.

7. Complete accurate patient documentation, including billing and productivity standards. Create and implement care plans, evaluate progress towards goals, record results, and communicate relevant information to the healthcare team.


  • Education: Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program and holds a credential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Skills: Proficient in inputting and retrieving computer information.
  • License: Licensed to provide respiratory care services in the respective state(s) of practice – Ohio and/or Michigan.
  • Certification: Current BLS certification required. ACLS, NRP, and PALS certification recommended (may be required in some business units). Membership in the American Association of Respiratory Care and other professional organizations encouraged.
