Job Description
The Traveling Equipment Technician independently manages the assembly, commissioning, inspection, repair, and troubleshooting of power and data supply systems at customer sites, both domestically and internationally. This self-directed role requires direct customer engagement, clear technical reporting, and collaboration with engineering teams on product improvements.
Core Responsibilities
· This position requires up to 80% travel with flexibility to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights. You will frequently interface with customers, end-users, vendors, and contractors to coordinate site activities, witness installations, and support start-up and commissioning.
· Troubleshoot PLCs, VFDs, and automated equipment on-site and remotely.
· Perform warranty and non-warranty repairs at customer facilities.
· Conduct routine inspections of existing system installations.
· Oversee pre-commissioning activities across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and automation disciplines with high-quality documentation.
· Lead final commissioning to demonstrate equipment functions and obtain customer acceptance.
· Clear punch-list items and participate in project meetings as required.
· Provide technical training to operators and maintenance personnel.
· Analyze and eliminate faults as the primary on-site troubleshooter.
· Use data acquisition software for equipment performance analysis.
· Prepare quotations for field support services.
· Independently coordinate all customer details and personal travel arrangements before each site visit.
· Deliver direct technical support to customers, contractors, sales, and engineering.
· Write and review all field service reports, test reports, RMAs, and corrective action reports for accuracy and clarity.
· Advise development teams on product improvements, potential weaknesses, and new opportunities based on field experience.
· Review technical publications to stay current with industry developments.
· Support engineering with design input and technical documentation.
· Safely operate aerial lifts and similar equipment to access systems at significant heights.
· Uphold quality, EHS policies, and core organizational values.
Required Qualifications
· Minimum 5 years in a field service role with decision-making responsibility.
· Electronics or electrical certificate or degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Ability to travel up to 80% of the time, including international travel.
· Strong skills in writing trip reports, return material authorizations, test reports, and corrective action reports.
· Knowledge of PLCs is highly preferred.
· Ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot systems using electrical schematics.
· Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
· Clean driving record.
· Comfort working at heights.
· Must currently hold or be able to obtain a valid passport and TWIC credential.
· Comprehensive hands-on experience with PLCs, VFDs, data acquisition, wiring, power equipment, and industrial electricity; Siemens and ABB platforms are highly preferred.
· Fluent spoken and written English; bilingual or multilingual candidates are desired.
· Physical ability to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds, stand, walk, climb, stoop, and work in environments with moving parts, dust, fumes, and moderate noise.
