Assistant Controller - Wholesale Apparel

New York, NY | $80,000 to $120,000 per year | Full-time

A wholesale apparel company in New York City is hiring an Assistant Controller. The company sells its products through large retail partners. This role handles day-to-day accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting. It also manages the import side of the business, including letters of credit, customs duty payments, and sales commission calculations.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, in New York, NY.

Compensation

$80,000 to $120,000 per year, based on experience.

What You'll Do

You will manage the company's import and wholesale accounting. That includes issuing letters of credit for overseas purchases, calculating and paying customs duties, and calculating and paying sales commissions. You will support the finance team with month-end activities, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

On the payables side, you will review and approve vendor invoices, generate checks, and initiate wire payments. On the receivables side, you will submit customer orders for credit approval, process credit card payments, and complete monthly AR reconciliations. You will also prepare bank reconciliations and maintain accurate records in Sage 100.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
• 3+ years of accounting experience in a wholesale business that sells through large retailers
• Experience issuing letters of credit and calculating and paying customs duties
• Experience calculating and paying sales commissions
• Hands-on experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations
• Proficiency with Sage 100
• Strong Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the apparel, footwear, or accessories industry
• Experience working with factoring companies
• Experience managing retailer chargebacks and deductions
• Familiarity with EDI order processing for major retailers
• CPA or progress toward a CPA
