Automation Controls Engineer

Location: Lancaster, SC
  • We are seeking an Automated Systems Engineer to take responsibility for automating all applicable manufacturing processes with ROI justification.
  • Your main role will be to identify, develop, and lead projects that will result in automated operations in Manufacturing and Packaging operations.
  • You will be responsible for identifying, selecting, and managing the purchasing of components to build automated systems, as well as managing the vendors who install and support such systems.
  • One of your key tasks will be troubleshooting and eliminating control systems issues, as well as handling controls projects.
  • You will develop and document new PLC control systems from concept to qualification.
  • Another important aspect of your role will be troubleshooting control systems wiring and PLC / SCADA logic.
  • You will maintain configuration control of the current PLC source code.
  • As the Automated Systems Engineer, you will select, test, and integrate hardware and software components such as robots, analog devices, motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, and lasers.
  • In addition, you will troubleshoot problems with on-line vision inspection systems utilizing Cognex InSight software and other vision software tools.
  • Your expertise will also be crucial in implementing quality improvement projects through error proofing, interlocks, and vision system (Cognex Vision) integration.
  • You will be responsible for laying out new industrial electrical control panels that are NFPA79/NEC/UL508A/CE compliant, as well as creating electrical and pneumatic schematics.
  • Managing electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, and pneumatic plumbing will also be part of your responsibilities.
  • You will arrange for and manage appropriate third-party contractor support for services associated with the electrical operations of production equipment and facilities.
  • Collaborating with Process/Manufacturing Engineers, you will understand process control issues and develop control solutions to enhance the process.
  • Working with members of the engineering department and other groups, your goal will be to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with a focus on enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost.
  • You will offer controls engineering support to plant operations and the maintenance department.
  • Regular attendance is required in this role.
  • Effective communication with other departments within the organization and the ability to function within a team environment are essential.
  • You may be assigned other duties as required to meet company objectives.

Minimum Requirements:

Essential qualifications for this position include Robotics and Automation Engineering experience. Strong electrical troubleshooting and PLC programming and troubleshooting skills are required. Supervisory experience is preferred. You must also possess a strong mechanical aptitude and a working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems. Excellent trouble shooting and diagnostic skills, with the ability to define problems and resolve them quickly, are a must. Good interpersonal skills are also required, along with the ability to interact with staff at all levels.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical, is required.
  • You must have a minimum of 2-4 years' experience as an Automation/Controls Engineer in a regulated industry.
  • Experience in a cGMP facility is also preferred.
