Automation Engineer

Compensation: $100,000 - $145,000 per year + Excellent benefits package (detailed below)

Working independently, the Automation Engineer utilizes their expertise and skills to develop innovative solutions for various projects. This role involves planning, executing, and evaluating strategies to meet project objectives efficiently and cost-effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

· Undertaking specific portions of broader assignments, applying standard practices and techniques, analyzing data, identifying discrepancies, and following through a series of related steps or processes

o Designing and implementing electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery based on given requirements and specifications

§ Creating control system equipment specifications and reviewing vendor drawings

§ Producing Logic Diagrams, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Control System Architectures, and data sheets

§ Developing functional descriptions and control philosophies to communicate functionality and company-developed programs

§ Assisting in the development of basic software to support Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)

§ Selecting instrumentation and automation hardware

§ Identifying and recommending changes for ineffective procedures, designs, or specifications

§ Preparing procurement specifications, material requisitions, and performing technical bid analysis

o Applying knowledge of the project change control process to identify potential changes

o Maintaining liaison with design and drafting groups

o Reviewing and approving drawings as required

o Reporting the status of assignments to the Project Engineer in terms of schedule, budget, delays, and problems

§ Assisting with the development of manpower, man-hour, and labor cost requirements for a project, and monitoring them to evaluate budget limitations

§ Leading the estimation of tasks and conducting material take-offs for a specific discipline

§ Ensuring the quality, quantity, and completeness of assigned engineering tasks

o Planning and scheduling engineering efforts associated with the assigned project

§ Maintaining accurate oral and written technical reports regarding engineering activities

§ Keeping proper engineering files and records

§ Developing an understanding of industry codes and standards

§ Collaborating actively and proactively as a team player, seeking and sharing information and guidance

o Conducting and participating in Factory Acceptance Testing of electrical and control components, such as PLC and Network Enclosures, E-Houses, and Motor Control Centers

§ Testing circuit continuity using appropriate equipment to ensure system compatibility and safety

§ Troubleshooting and isolating faults

o Assisting with Start-Up and Commissioning activities

§ Travelling to the project site for start-up and commissioning

§ Performing electrical and control duties, as well as some mechanical tasks, including set up, adjustment, calibration, tuning, and troubleshooting

§ Troubleshooting electrical controls, PLC programs, processor-based program/diagnostic panels, and relay logic controls in manufacturing equipment

§ Gathering and maintaining technical records, performing computations, plotting data, and creating charts as required

Qualifications and Experience

· Experience with HMI program/software such as Panel View, iFix, Ignition, Delta V, or similar distributive control systems is highly desirable

· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Control Systems, coupled with a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in electrical controls engineering, related controls engineering, or industrial automation

· Experience in the preparation and execution of project scopes in Electrical Controls engineering

· Extensive knowledge of work sequence, general content, and methods used to design, test, commission, and modify control systems in the electrical controls and industrial automation fields

· Ability to analyze data and present findings in written reports

· Familiarity with various concepts, practices, and procedures in the field

· Working experience with related industry codes and standards

· Knowledge of the mining and/or bulk material handling industries

· Installation and technical support of PLC-based hardware and software

· Experience in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) on Controls and/or Power Distribution equipment, such as medium voltage switchgear and Variable Frequency Drives

· Experience in handling electrical power, control, and instrumentation circuits by generating project-related drawings using AutoCAD and Microsoft-based software

· Demonstrates technical expertise in the respective field

Other Requirements

The ability to travel without restrictions is essential, as the role requires travel to project sites and the ability to work on-site for extended periods of time to meet project requirements.
