Physical Therapist – Pediatrics

Pediatric Physical Therapist:

  • We are seeking an experienced Physical Therapist to develop and implement treatment programs for pediatric patients in accordance with physical therapy principles and practices. The Physical Therapist will collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team and report to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.


1. Review and evaluate physical therapy requisitions.

a. Conduct patient interviews and assessments to determine physical condition and treatment needs.

2. Design individualized exercise and treatment programs for assigned pediatric patients.

a. Determine appropriate equipment usage, application, and body position for treatments such as exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and traction.

b. Provide instruction to patients on program segments, including the proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetic appliances and devices.

c. Monitor patient progress and recommend modifications and changes to treatment plans as needed.

d. Consult with physicians on available alternatives.

3. Prepare written documentation, including evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and discharge summaries.

4. Communicate observations and collaborate with nursing and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care.

5. Provide guidance and direction to assigned staff members assisting with patient care.

6. Maintain department policies, procedures, objectives, quality initiatives, safety protocols, and infection control standards.

a. Follow hospital-wide safety responsibilities:

1. Ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.

2. Possess working knowledge of all hospital safety policies and procedures, including fire safety and disaster protocol.

3. Adhere to safety practices on equipment.

4. Use safety devices on equipment and ensure proper working condition.

5. Wear required safety clothing, glasses, gloves, shoes, etc., and follow "Universal Precautions" as indicated.

6. Report any unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.

7. Attend safety programs as scheduled.

b. Follow the department's "Policy and Procedure" manual.

c. Assist the Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators.

7. Assist with the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

8. Attend required meetings and participate in committees as directed.

9. Transport patients to and from the PT Department when necessary.

10. Assume the duties and responsibilities of Senior Therapists in their absence.

11. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-service meetings and workshops, etc.

12. Attend all annual mandatory educational programs.

13. Provide age-appropriate care to patients of all ages.

14. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, ensuring patient satisfaction through friendly and attentive interactions.

  • Must hold a current license, or be eligible to obtain a license, to practice physical therapy in the state of New York.
  • Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • This position requires significant physical effort, including occasional repetitive movements. May involve lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to independently lift at least thirty (30) pounds and up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds with assistance.
  • Category II. No exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, although unplanned exposure may occur.
  • Adhere to universal precautions when providing patient care.
  • Elmira is a charming small town located in western New York, near the Pennsylvania border. It is nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes region, known for its stunning scenery and outdoor recreational opportunities. Elmira is home to the Corning Glass Works, a major industrial landmark located just 14 miles west of Corning. This area offers a wide range of activities, including exploring underground caves, taking hot air balloon rides above scenic mountains, visiting museums, enjoying amusement parks, shopping, dining, attending concerts, and more. The most pleasant months in Elmira are August, July, and June. The public school district has an average of 15.7 students per teacher. Elmira College, Elmira Business Institute, Corning Community College, Mansfield University, Ithaca College, and Cornell University are all located nearby.
  • Elmira is approximately 2 hours away from Rochester and Syracuse.
  • It is also just a 30-minute drive to Watkins Glen, located at the south end of Seneca Lake.
