  • Develop and implement personalized treatment plans based on the principles and practices of Physical Therapy, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. The Staff Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.


1. Assess requisitions for Physical Therapy services.

a. Conduct patient interviews and evaluate their physical condition and needs.

2. Create customized exercise and treatment programs for assigned patients.

a. Determine appropriate equipment usage, application, and body positioning for treatments such as exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool therapy, heat therapy, ultrasound, paraffin therapy, cold packs, electrical stimulation, and traction.

b. Instruct patients on the use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetic appliances and devices as necessary.

c. Recommend modifications or adjustments to treatment plans based on ongoing evaluation of patient progress.

d. Consult with physicians as needed to discuss alternative treatments.

3. Maintain accurate written documentation including evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and discharge summaries.

4. Communicate patient observations, facts, and comments with nursing and interdisciplinary team members in order to ensure efficient coordination of healthcare plans.

5. Provide guidance and direction to assisting staff members involved in patient care.

6. Uphold department policies, procedures, objectives, quality initiatives, safety guidelines, and infection control protocols.

a. Adhere to hospital-wide safety responsibilities:

1. Create a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff members.

2. Be knowledgeable about all hospital safety policies and procedures (including fire safety and disaster protocols).

3. Adhere to safety practices when using equipment.

4. Use safety devices on equipment and ensure their proper functioning.

5. Wear appropriate safety clothing and follow "Universal Precautions" when indicated.

6. Report any unsafe acts or conditions to a supervisor.

7. Attend safety programs as required.

b. Familiarize oneself with and adhere to the department's "Policy and Procedure" manual.

c. Assist the Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators as needed.

7. Assist in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies.

8. Attend required meetings and participate in assigned committees.

9. Transport patients to and from the PT Department as necessary.

10. Assume the responsibilities of Senior Therapists when they are absent.

11. Continuously enhance professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops, among other opportunities.

12. Attend all mandatory annual educational programs as required for the position.

13. Provide age-appropriate care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

14. Understand and demonstrate the importance of meeting the needs of customers/patients through friendly and caring interactions, attentiveness to their needs (both psychological and physical), and proactive communication to ensure a secure and pleasant experience.

  • Must possess a valid license, or be eligible to obtain a license, to practice physical therapy in New York State at the time of hire.
  • Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Considerable physical effort may be required, including occasional repetitive actions. Tasks may involve lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must be capable of lifting at least thirty (30) pounds independently and up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds with assistance.
  • Category II. Tasks involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. However, there may be unplanned tasks that involve such exposure.
  • Adhere to universal precautions when providing patient care.
  • Elmira is a charming small town located in western New York, near the Pennsylvania border and in close proximity to the beautiful Finger Lakes region. One of the prominent landmarks in the area is the Corning Glass Works, which is approximately 14 miles west of Corning. Elmira offers numerous hidden gems for exploration, including underground caves, hot air balloon rides over picturesque mountains, museums, amusement parks, state parks, dining options, shopping experiences, concerts, and more. The most pleasant months in Elmira are August, July, and June. The public Elmira School District has an average of 15.7 students per teacher.
