The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing respiratory therapy to patients of all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. This role involves performing assigned duties and responsibilities under the supervision of the Respiratory Care Department leadership team and the Medical Directors of Respiratory Care. The Respiratory Care Practitioner must adhere to regulatory standards, clinical practice guidelines, and approved policies and procedures. Additionally, this individual will have the autonomy to make independent decisions regarding patient therapy modification based on clinical practice guidelines and protocols.

1. Demonstrate and maintain competency in performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures within their scope of practice. This includes general care, critical care, emergency care, and diagnostic procedures such as:

  • General Care: patient assessment, administration of medications via nebulizers and inhalers, broncho pulmonary hygiene, and hyperinflation therapy
  • Critical Care: ventilation management (invasive and non-invasive), airway management, tracheostomy care, cuff monitoring, intubation/extubation, and high-risk newborn deliveries
  • Emergency Care: rapid response and code team participation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), airway management, and patient stabilization
  • Diagnostic Care: blood analysis, specimen collection, monitoring, pulmonary function screening, and electrocardiograms (EKG)

2. Safely operate and troubleshoot therapeutic and diagnostic equipment used in respiratory care, including gas administration devices, mechanical ventilators, laboratory equipment, and age-specific patient care equipment.

3. Utilize evidence-based best practices and clinical practice guidelines to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective respiratory care.

4. Provide education to patients and their families on disease processes, tobacco cessation, and respiratory care services. This includes instruction on home care equipment and medications.

5. Participate in the clinical instruction of respiratory care, nursing, and medical students/residents as needed. Contribute to the orientation of new staff members and support their professional growth.

6. Adhere to all Respiratory Care and Hospital policies and procedures assigned to the role. Function independently in designated areas of responsibility.

7. Ensure accurate patient documentation, including billing and productivity standards. Collaborate with the healthcare team to create, evaluate, and communicate the patient's plan of care.


  • Education: Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program and maintain Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Skills: Proficient in inputting and retrieving computer information.
  • License: Licensed to practice respiratory care in the respective state(s) – Ohio and/or Michigan.
  • Certifications: Current BLS certification. ACLS, NRP, and PALS certifications are recommended and may be required at certain business units. Encouraged to be a member of the American Association of Respiratory Care and other professional organizations.
