Senior /Lead Estimator - Heavy Civil

A well-established transportation, bridge, highway, and heavy civil construction firm is expanding its central Virginia team and hiring a Senior/Lead Estimator to lead bids on projects ranging from $5 million to $60 million. This role carries real influence over project selection, bid strategy, and execution, and includes mentoring junior estimators as the team grows.
Schedule Full-time, day shift. Some local travel is required, with occasional weekend availability.
Compensation $140,000 - $180,000 Per Year
What You'll Do
You will own bid documents and interpret civil construction plans independently, leading quantity takeoffs and building out complete project scopes. You will define subcontractor needs, meet DBE goals, and flag constructability concerns early, while driving value engineering opportunities and owning pre-bid coordination with owners.
You will build and submit complete bid packages and project schedules, set bid strategy, and defend the number with leadership. As a senior member of the team, you will also mentor and develop junior estimators as the bench grows.
Required Qualifications
- 7 to 10 or more years in civil construction estimating
- Strong DOT background, with VDOT or NCDOT experience highly valued
- Proven experience on highway, earthwork, bridge, or utility projects
- Track record bidding work independently in the $5 million to $60 million range
- Proficiency in HeavyBid or a comparable estimating platform
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in construction management or a related field
- Experience meeting DBE participation goals on DOT-funded projects
- Familiarity with value engineering and pre-bid owner coordination
