Superintendent – Heavy Civil Construction – desire utilities experience
Civil Superintendent, Utilities
Columbia, SC | Full-Time | On-Site
A heavy civil site development contractor based in central South Carolina is seeking an experienced Superintendent to lead field operations across a portfolio of active projects. The company specializes in site preparation, mass excavation, utility installation, landfill construction, reclamation, and mining work serving commercial, industrial, municipal, and mining markets. This is a field leadership role with direct responsibility for safety, production, scheduling, and crew development across multiple concurrent project sites.
Schedule
Full-time, on-site. Project work is currently concentrated in central South Carolina, with some travel to varying project locations required.
Compensation: $90,000 - $120,000 Per Year
What You'll Do
As Superintendent, you will direct all field personnel across multiple active project sites, holding direct accountability for safety compliance, production output, schedule adherence, and quality standards. You will lead a team of foremen and lead men, providing them with the technical guidance, equipment, and resources they need to execute their scopes effectively. Building a strong team culture across crews will be an ongoing and central part of this role.
On the project management side, you will attend pre-construction and client meetings, coordinate with project engineers to ensure materials are submitted, approved, and delivered on schedule, and confirm that site layout work is completed ahead of construction activity. You will schedule equipment deliveries, coordinate with engineers and owners, manage erosion control inspections and compliance, and communicate scope, schedule, and billing information to the office in a timely manner. You will also maintain project files covering fuel sheets, load count records, hourly work logs, change order requests, and materials lists.
MSHA compliance is a significant component of this role. You will maintain and audit onsite MSHA binders, ensure foremen keep all required paperwork current, conduct random inspections of vehicles, equipment, and project sites, and attend all required MSHA training. You will also perform random field inspections to monitor safety conditions and production standards across sites.
In addition to supervisory responsibilities, you will support recruiting and screening of new field personnel, assist with onboarding and training, and participate in safety meetings. When conditions require it, you will operate heavy equipment directly, perform minor emergency repairs, and assist with preventive maintenance tasks including fuel and load count logging, silt fence installation, and erosion control maintenance.
