Automation Engineer

Location: Idaho Falls, ID

We are currently seeking a talented Automation Engineer to join our dynamic team. As a Robotic Systems Technician, you will be instrumental in the development, management, and optimization of process control systems for our production facilities. Your expertise and knowledge will help establish and maintain industry-leading standards for process control systems and associated equipment.

Your Responsibilities

  • Create and update PLC and Human Machine Interface (HMI) programming standards for our processing plants.
  • Install and maintain hardware, following structured cabling and documentation guidelines.
  • Collaborate with corporate engineering project managers to implement control systems for new installations.
  • Perform troubleshooting and maintenance on existing control systems in collaboration with plant management teams.
  • Ensure compliance with company control system standards by working closely with corporate IT professionals.
  • Monitor process network switches and document network architecture.
  • Manage software licensing and support contracts for process controls software.
  • Utilize various application software such as Rockwell Factory Talk products, FT Historian, FT Vantage point, FT Asset Center, FT View SE, and Thin Manager.
  • Oversee database operations, including SQL server, and develop reports based on historical process data.
  • Create HMI graphical object and screen standards for use across all processing facilities.
  • Provide project support for process control initiatives.
  • Implement and maintain disaster recovery solutions for process control equipment.
  • Perform necessary maintenance on PLC hardware and software.
  • Be the primary point of contact for process network issues, conducting troubleshooting as needed.
  • Manage hardware and software inventory and comply with licensing standards.
  • Effectively communicate with stakeholders about incidents, changes, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with GMP, safety, and plant regulations.


  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (B.S.) from an accredited college or university; a Master’s degree is preferred but not required.
  • Have at least five years of experience in PLC programming within food manufacturing environments, working with networked PLCs.
  • Possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical information to a diverse audience.
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and effectively prioritize tasks.
  • Seamlessly adapt to changing assignments and responsibilities as a flexible team player.

Additional Information

This role may require around 10-15% of regional travel and occasional overtime, including weekends and holidays. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. while traveling is essential. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
