Position Summary:

  • We are searching for a dedicated individual with a strong background in accounting and financial reporting to join our team as the Director of Accounting for a nonprofit organization.
  • The Director of Accounting will be responsible for overseeing budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting activities.
  • In addition, this position will provide financial leadership for our largest agency, Family and Community Services.
  • Direct reports for this role include the Accounting Manager, Contract/Voucher Manager, Client Financial Analyst, and Adult Guardianship Program.
  • The Director of Accounting reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.

Essential Competencies for Success in this Position:

  • Experience in navigating funding models and requirements for nonprofit human service organizations at both the federal and New York State levels.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in nonprofit finance, including accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, financial operations, financial reporting, and revenue cycle.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a team effectively.
  • Ability to develop strong partnerships with the finance team, agency leaders, and external agencies and partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer, oversee the personnel and systems responsible for day-to-day accounting and financial reporting.
  2. Ensure the timely preparation and distribution of all financial reports, including regulatory reports, consolidated fiscal reports, quarterly reports, budget reports, and monthly and annual financial statements.
  3. Coordinate the scheduling and completion of the independent audit and other external financial reports.
  4. Maintain financial records and accounting systems to ensure compliance with regulations, accounting practices, and contractual requirements.
  5. Participate in the development of financial projections and analysis to support decision making.
  6. Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to drive process changes and improvements.
  7. Maintain effective relationships with external parties and collaborate with regulatory agencies and funders to address payment and financial reporting issues.
  8. Provide financial leadership for the organization, including monthly closing processes, financial reporting for executive leaders and the board, annual budgeting, and oversight of the adult guardianship program and voucher submissions.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field is preferred.
  • CPA certification is preferred.

Knowledge and Work Experience:

  • Ten or more years of progressive experience in not-for-profit finance and accounting.
  • Five or more years of experience in a managerial or director-level finance role.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships with senior leaders and work effectively at all levels of an organization.
  • Track record of leading projects, managing teams, and handling multiple priorities.
