Emergency Services Nursing Director
Location: San Antonio, Texas
Compensation: $110,000 – $150,000 per year + Annual Incentive Opportunity + Full Benefits
Schedule: Full-Time, Days
Position Summary:
The Emergency Services Nursing Director provides visionary and strategic leadership for all nursing and patient care operations within the Emergency Department (ED) at [Hospital Name/Organization]. Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), this role holds 24/7 responsibility for clinical and operational management, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and efficient emergency care services.
The Director will lead a diverse team of nurses, advanced practice providers, and support staff, cultivating a culture of clinical excellence, teamwork, critical thinking, and resilience in this fast-paced environment. Key areas of focus include staff development, patient throughput optimization, resource management, quality improvement initiatives, and adherence to regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency Department, aligning departmental goals with the hospital’s mission and strategic objectives.

Oversee daily ED operations, ensuring timely and effective patient triage, assessment, treatment, and discharge.

Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based nursing practices, policies, and procedures specific to emergency care.

Lead, mentor, and develop nurse managers, charge nurses, and clinical staff, fostering accountability, professional growth, and continuous learning.

Ensure ongoing competency and training of ED clinical staff, with an emphasis on critical care and emergency protocols.

Collaborate with physicians, hospitalists, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver optimal patient outcomes and experiences.

Drive quality improvement initiatives, monitor key performance indicators (e.g., patient flow, wait times), and implement action plans to enhance patient safety and care effectiveness.

Manage the department’s budget, ensuring efficient resource utilization, appropriate staffing, and fiscal accountability.

Maintain a visible leadership presence within the ED, serving as a clinical resource and advocate for patients and staff.

Ensure full compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards governing emergency care.

Serve as a liaison between the ED and other hospital departments, as well as external EMS agencies, to promote seamless coordination and communication.

Lead the development of new programs and services to address community needs and enhance emergency care offerings.

Oversee disaster preparedness and emergency response initiatives for the department and hospital.
Qualifications:
Required:
-
Active and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas.

Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.

Minimum of five (5) years of recent clinical experience in an Emergency Department setting.

At least two (2) years of progressive leadership experience within a hospital ED, such as Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, or full-time Charge Nurse with significant leadership responsibilities.

Strong leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities in high-acuity environments.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with patients, families, physicians, and staff, even under pressure.

Proven experience in budget management and resource allocation.

Thorough knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements for emergency care services.
Preferred:

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a master's degree in a healthcare-related field.

CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) certification.
-
Experience with process improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma.

Background in high-volume Emergency Departments or Level II Trauma Centers.
