Surgical Services Nursing Director
Location: Tucson, Arizona
Salary Range: $118,000 to $155,000
Compensation: Paid Relocation + Performance Bonus
Position Summary:
The Surgical Services Nursing Director provides strategic direction and operational leadership for all nursing and patient care functions within the Surgical Services department(s) at [Hospital Name/Organization]. Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), this essential role is responsible for ensuring the consistent delivery of safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care.
Leading a dedicated team of nursing professionals and support staff, the Director will cultivate a culture of clinical excellence, professional growth, and teamwork. With 24/7 accountability for the department, the Director oversees resource management, staff development, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:

Deliver visionary leadership to the Surgical Services nursing team, aligning departmental priorities with the hospital’s mission and strategic goals.

Manage the day-to-day operations of all surgical areas, ensuring smooth patient flow, effective resource utilization, and compliance with organizational policies.

Develop, implement, and regularly evaluate nursing practice standards, policies, and procedures that meet evidence-based guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Mentor and develop nurse managers, charge nurses, and clinical staff, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous professional development.

Ensure clinical staff competency through effective onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and ongoing education.

Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes and elevate the patient experience.

Lead quality improvement initiatives by analyzing performance data and implementing targeted action plans to enhance patient safety and care effectiveness.

Oversee departmental budgeting, ensuring prudent financial management and efficient allocation of resources.

Maintain a visible leadership presence within surgical services, serving as a role model, mentor, and advocate for nursing excellence.

Ensure full compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.

Act as a key liaison between the Surgical Services department and other hospital departments, promoting collaboration and clear communication.

Contribute to the development and implementation of new surgical programs and services to meet evolving patient and community needs.

Demonstrate exemplary communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills as a professional role model.
Qualifications:
Required:

Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Arizona.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.

Minimum of two (2) years of progressive leadership experience within a hospital surgical services environment (e.g., Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, or Charge Nurse with significant leadership duties).

Proven leadership abilities with strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrated expertise in budget management and resource allocation.

In-depth knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements for surgical services.
Preferred:

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a master’s degree in a healthcare-related field.

Certification in a relevant nursing specialty (e.g., CNOR).

Experience with process improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma.
