  • MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

    As a Polysomnography Technologist, you will work under the general supervision of the clinical director or designee to provide a comprehensive assessment and treatment of sleep disorders. This may include conducting polysomnography, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and providing patient care and education. Once you have completed the introductory period and demonstrated the necessary competencies, you will be able to work independently.

Gathering and Analyzing Patient Information

1. Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and address their specific needs. This includes physical and mental limitations, current emotional and physiological status, and relevant medical and social history. Determine appropriate testing parameters and procedures in collaboration with the ordering physician or clinical director, following laboratory protocols.

2. Complete and verify documentation.

3. Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient.

Preparing for Testing

4. Prepare and calibrate testing equipment, ensuring proper functioning and making adjustments when necessary.

5. Apply electrodes and sensors according to established standards.

6. Perform physiologic calibrations to ensure accurate signals and make adjustments if needed.

7. Fit positive airway pressure (PAP) masks.

Performing Polysomnographic Procedures

8. Follow procedural protocols for various tests (e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration), ensuring accurate data collection.

9. Establish and document baseline values, such as body position, Oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, during "lights out" procedures.

10. Acquire polysomnographic data, monitoring study tracing quality to ensure artifact-free signals. Make necessary adjustments as required.

11. Document sleep stages, clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of results.

12. Implement necessary interventions for patient safety and therapeutic intervention (e.g., continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration).

13. Complete the data collection process during "lights on" procedures, verifying data integrity and instructing patients on questionnaires, etc.

14. Provide age-specific care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

15. Perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions when necessary.

16. Score sleep/wake stages according to accepted guidelines.

17. Score clinical events (e.g., respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals) following center-specific protocols.

18. Generate accurate reports by summarizing sleep/wake and clinical event data.

19. Adhere to safety and infection control regulations and standards.

20. Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance

21. Evaluate sleep study equipment and inventory

22. Maintain valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (preferred)

23. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.

24. Exhibit appropriate social skills.

25. Respond to patient inquiries about procedures, providing relevant information.

26. Analyze complex situations and apply relevant policies.

27. Collect and analyze Sleep Lab Quality Improvement (QI) data.

28. Carry out any other assigned duties.

  • Education and Experience:
  • Successful completion of an approved associate or higher degree program in Polysomnographic technology, respiratory therapy or nursing. Certified as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists within 1.5 years of accepting the position. Must hold a valid NYS Respiratory Therapist or Technician License or NYS Polysomnographic License.
  • CPR Requirements:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire date. Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
