PRIMARY ROLE:
- Design and administer individualized treatment programs according to established Physical Therapy practices. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team. The Staff Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Screen and assess patients referred for Physical Therapy.
a. Conduct patient interviews and evaluate physical condition and requirements.
2. Develop personalized exercise and treatment plans for assigned patients.
a. Determine appropriate equipment usage, application, and body position, making adjustments as needed for treatments such as exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool therapy, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and traction.
b. Instruct patients on program segments, including the correct use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetic appliances and devices.
c. Recommend modifications or changes based on the patient's progress, consulting with physicians when necessary.
3. Prepare written documentation, such as evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and discharge summaries, as required by professional standards and departmental guidelines.
4. Communicate observations and relevant information to nursing and the interdisciplinary team to ensure coordinated healthcare planning.
5. Provide guidance and direction to support staff involved in patient care.
6. Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality initiatives, safety guidelines, and infection control protocols.
a. Fulfill hospital-wide safety responsibilities:
1. Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
2. Familiarize oneself with all hospital safety policies and procedures, including fire safety and disaster protocols.
3. Follow safety practices when operating equipment.
4. Properly use safety devices on equipment and ensure their functionality.
5. Wear appropriate safety clothing and gear as required, adhering to "Universal Precautions".
6. Report any unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
7. Attend safety programs as scheduled.
b. Follow the department's "Policy and Procedure" manual.
c. Assist the Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators when needed.
7. Assist with the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
8. Attend required meetings and participate in assigned committees.
9. Transport patients to and from the Physical Therapy Department as required.
10. Perform duties and responsibilities of Senior Therapists in their absence.
11. Enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs, staying up to date with current literature, attending in-service meetings, workshops, and other relevant activities.
12. Fulfill annual mandatory educational requirements.
13. Provide age-appropriate care to patients of various age groups.
14. Demonstrate exceptional customer service skills, ensuring patient satisfaction through friendly and compassionate interactions, attentiveness to their needs, and maintaining open communication.
EDUCATION:
- Must possess a valid license to practice Physical Therapy in NYS at the time of employment.
EXPERIENCE:
- Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire date.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Significant physical effort and occasional repetitive exertion. This may involve lifting, pushing, pulling, and the ability to lift at least thirty (30) pounds independently and up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds with assistance.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
- Category II. Tasks that do not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. However, there may be instances where performing unplanned Category I tasks is required.

- Adhere to universal precautions and infection control protocols during patient care.
