Physical Therapy Job Functions:

  1. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary treatment team to create and implement individualized treatment plans for patients based on the principles and practices of Physical Therapy. Report to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Review requisitions for Physical Therapy.

a. Conduct patient interviews and evaluate their physical condition and needs.

2. Develop a program of corrective exercises and treatments for assigned patients.

a. Determine proper equipment usage, application, and body position for exercises, gait training, soft tissue mobility, and various therapies such as whirlpool, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and traction.

b. Instruct patients on proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetic appliances and devices.

c. Recommend modifications or changes to the treatment program based on evaluation of patient's progress.

d. Consult with physicians to discuss alternative treatment options.

3. Prepare written documentation such as evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and discharge summaries.

4. Communicate observations, facts, and comments with nursing and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordination of patient care.

5. Provide guidance and direction to support staff assisting in patient care.

6. Follow department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality initiative programs for safety and infection control.

a. Adhere to hospital-wide safety responsibilities:

1. Ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.

2. Familiarize oneself with all hospital safety policies and procedures, including fire safety and disaster protocol.

3. Practice safety measures when using equipment.

4. Use safety devices on equipment and ensure their proper working condition.

5. Wear required safety clothing and respect "Universal Precautions" when necessary.

6. Report any unsafe act or condition to the supervisor.

7. Attend safety programs as required.

b. Be familiar with and adhere to the department's "Policy and Procedure" manual.

c. Assist the Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators as needed.

7. Assist in the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

8. Attend meetings and participate in committees as directed.

9. Assist in transporting patients to and from the PT Department when necessary.

10. Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Senior Therapists in their absence.

11. Enhance professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, workshops, etc.

12. Attend all annual mandatory educational programs required by the position.

13. Provide age-appropriate care to patients of all ages.

14. Interact with customers/patients in a friendly and caring manner, attending to their physical and psychological needs and maintaining communication to provide a secure and pleasant experience.

EDUCATION:

  • Must be licensed, or eligible to obtain a license, to practice physical therapy in NYS at the time of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days of hire date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position requires physical exertion and occasional repetitive efforts, including lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to independently lift at least thirty (30) pounds and up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds with assistance.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

  • Category II. This position involves no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. However, the employee may be required to perform unplanned Category I tasks.

INFECTION CONTROL:

  • Adhere to universal precautions when engaging in patient care.
