A privately held northern New Jersey manufacturer of water and wastewater process equipment is hiring a Project Engineer. The company is growing, with a full order book, and is building more work into its own fabrication shop rather than subcontracting it out. This is a project ownership role, the engineer carries an order through to shipment, covering schedule, submittals, documentation, customer conversations, and shop floor coordination.
Schedule
Full-time, 100% onsite. Time split between the office, the company's nearby fabrication shop, and occasional customer sites. No relocation assistance, local candidates only.
Compensation
$110,000 to $120,000 base salary, depending on experience.
What You'll Do
This engineer manages engineered equipment projects from order receipt through shipment, holding schedule and budget throughout. The role serves as the customer-facing engineer on each project, working directly with consulting engineers, contractors, municipalities, and end users. This position prepares and manages submittal packages, O&M documentation, and project schedules, and coordinates internally across sales, engineering, purchasing, and production. The engineer works within public works requirements, including specifications, prevailing wage, compliance, and approvals, and coordinates daily with the in-house fabrication shop and outside fabricators on drawings, build sequencing, and equipment inspections. The role includes reviewing drawings and designs for fit, function, and manufacturability before they reach the shop, and participating in weekly project engineering and fabrication meetings to keep the backlog moving.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
- 4+ years of project engineering experience in manufacturing, water and wastewater, or public works (mid-level seat, not entry level)
- Hands-on experience owning engineered equipment projects end to end, including fabricated equipment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read and review fabrication drawings
- Highly organized, able to manage several projects at once, with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Located in northern New Jersey and able to work fully onsite
Preferred Qualifications
- Water and wastewater equipment background
- Experience with municipalities, utilities, or public works contracts
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
Compensation and Benefits
- $110,000 to $120,000 base salary, depending on experience
- Medical premium paid 100% by the company for individual and family coverage on the base plan, with a lower-deductible buy-up plan available
- Clear path to Senior Project Engineer, with later routes into design engineering or product development
