Newport News, VA | $100,000 to $130,000 Per Year, plus bonus
The Senior Project Engineer leads a small team on medium to large scale projects, or takes charge of a critical portion of a larger initiative. This role works independently to make impactful engineering decisions, while collaborating with senior leaders on complex challenges to ensure every project is executed with precision.
Schedule
Full time, based in Newport News, VA, with travel to other locations approximately 50% of the time.
Compensation
$100,000 to $130,000 per year, plus bonus, based on experience.
What You'll Do
The Senior Project Engineer develops engineering designs, material specifications, and project cost estimates, and conducts feasibility studies and research to support design choices. This role ensures designs meet required standards and codes, validates field work, creates as-built drawings, and reviews engineering submissions for accuracy and compliance. The Senior Project Engineer coordinates project activities with vendors, contractors, and plant teams to stay on schedule, directs vendors and contractors on layout planning and utility requirements, and reviews consultant work to suggest changes as needed.
This role also conducts planning and operational reviews during pre-project phases, defines project scope, prepares proposals, and evaluates bids. The Senior Project Engineer submits regular status reports to management, assists with contract administration, prepares project documents, and monitors installations to ensure they meet specifications, budgets, and timelines, while managing project budgets to meet financial targets.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Project management, contract administration, and national codes and standards interpretation skills
- Proficient in AutoCAD
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Proficient in engineering economics
- Knowledge of installation and construction project scheduling
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to travel to other locations approximately 50% of the time
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of engineering principles and techniques related to food processing and the meat industry
- Previous experience managing multi-million dollar projects with large scopes
