Power Plant Operations Manager
Position Summary
The individual in this role provides leadership to plant operations personnel to ensure the safe and efficient operation of generating equipment, under the general direction of the General Manager. This position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the facility to ensure both the safety of personnel and the efficiency of the equipment. The Operations Manager will develop and maintain procedures for start-up, shutdown, normal, abnormal, and emergency operations, track plant performance, and prepare operational and outage reports. Additionally, this role ensures that all plant operations are compliant with all permits, laws, and regulatory requirements.
Major Duties & Responsibilities

Lead and direct Shift Supervisors and other Operations Department personnel to maintain generating requirements and plant efficiency while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal safety and environmental standards.

Continuously review and improve operational processes, ensuring operating personnel are properly trained and adhere to established procedures and practices.

Develop action plans to align employee performance with operational processes.

Investigate operational anomalies and incidents to enhance equipment availability and performance, while minimizing maintenance needs.

Prepare and submit plant operation reports in a timely manner and investigate forced outages.

Lead recruitment efforts, including interviewing and hiring, and ensure comprehensive safety training and orientation for all operations personnel.

Prepare operating department budgets and make recommendations to the General Manager concerning operating and capital budgets.

Review and provide operational input to maintenance, assisting in the evaluation and troubleshooting of equipment issues.

Set department and group goals based on market dynamics, customer needs, employee needs, and stakeholder interests.

Collaborate with the EHS compliance supervisor to support all plant safety programs.

Coordinate plant training activities, including budgeting and scheduling.

Ensure consistency and the replication of best practices across all operations shift teams.

Serve as the primary contact for the ISO-NE Lead Market participant and transmission operator for non-real-time communications about production issues and information.

Oversee operations personnel functions related to NERC Reliability Standards, including Bulk Electric System malfunctions, relay operation reports, and events requiring time-bound reporting.

Maintain proficiency in GADs reporting, Microsoft Office Suite tools, and Maximo CMMS software. Siemens T3000 control systems or Siemens combustion turbine experience is a plus.
Additional Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Must be physically capable of navigating plant facilities and stairways.

Ability to work in a standard office environment and operate a computer and other office equipment.

The position may require working in environments with hazardous materials and toxic fumes. Additionally, exposure to high heat, loud noise, steam, combustible gases, rotating machinery, and other conditions typical in an operating generation facility is expected.
Education/Experience Required
Job Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or equivalent experience is preferred.

10+ years of power plant or similar experience is required.

At least 5 years of experience supervising technical, supervisory, and administrative personnel is required. Strong leadership and motivational skills are essential.

Experience in leading a represented workforce is desired.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
-
This position may involve standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, shoes, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, fall protection gear, and high-voltage protective equipment) must be worn during certain duties. Working with hazardous materials may be required.

The role may require extended working hours, varied shifts, weekend and holiday work, depending on schedules, workload, and project requirements. "On-call" status may periodically be required.

All employees are required to participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug testing.
